What I never got was how Madara kept Pain under control when Pain, by all conceivable means, was stronger then him. I don't see how some one with far superior eyes would follow Madara when he could follow the same path as Madara...just better?

I think Madara resorted to something far simpler than genjutsu, and used psychological manipulation.

He saw in Pain a tortured war orphan who wanted nothing more than to finally see world peace... and offered him a way to obtain it. I think Madara simply manipulated Pain into cooperating with him.

Utakata had no chance really, even if he used his bubbles, they'd get absorbed by Preta Path cause it's considered Jutsu. Pain had enough man power to take him out if he transformed too. Utakata was really caught by surprise by Ashura Path's Flaming Arrow Missiles, no one in this manga uses missiles other than that character. I'm pretty sure missiles are unavoidable at point blank range, even if he were to use his bubble shield' he'd have to take the direct impact of multiple missile shells and explosions that are strong enough to cause craters. We've seen Utakata take on multiple people during the filler twice before though, but the whole reason he died so easily, was because they didn't want to show off Pain's moves, that's all.

Well, at the Kage Summit, they were pointing out all the aggressive moves Kumo has made, it's possible the strongest or second-strongest of the five villages.

Konoha is supposed to be the weakest or 2nd weakest because of the Orochimaru attack. It was possibly the most powerful before it and will be the most powerful once the new generation fully matures, but they're on the weaker side of the big 5 afaik.

Most likely is the strongest, considering Sand can't be that powerful (they got hurt with the Orochimaru attack too) and Madara owned the Mizukage's country for a bit.
