I read 4 WSJ series. I could easily give up Bleach without any loss in entertainment, Bakuman while interesting isn't that huge to me, so just Naruto and One Piece, OP is what I'd truly miss, but oh well, I'd deal.

Ah, my bad lol. Why does it take so long for the UK version? Do they use their own VA's or something?

The manga actually isn't very far behind in the US. Last time I bothered to flip through a volume at the bookstore (maybe a month or two ago) it was already finished with the Pain fight.

Not that its comparable to reading chapters the same week as they release in Japan, but whoever handles the manga in the US is busting their asses to get the stuff out.

I'd seriously miss Gintama if Shounen Jump decided it was going to just release translated stuff 3 years behind Japan like it currently does.

Shueisha doesn't seem to realize that scanlations and fansubs are the reason stuff like Naruto and Bleach was able to break through so amazingly well in the US.

there are dozens of properties that could possibly succeed in the US/Europe, but when a company can read potential based on a widespread internet fanbase, they're taking less risk. Bleach and Naruto must've made many many millions in the West by now via manga sales, dvd sales, tv licensing revenues, video game licenses, etc.

In addition to the time delay, I think westerners pursue the online versions out of price concerns. Manga is dirt fucking cheap in asia. While a naruto volume isn't too much of a bank breaker here, it is a bit more expensive than asian counterparts... I've got a Korean version of Naruto vol 37 that retails for 4,500 korean won... which is 4 bucks. Jumps are also super cheap... again, Korean Jump (half Korean comics, half Japanese inc One Piece and Naruto) for 2,000 won (roughly 1.75 US) and it weighs in at over 400 pages of comics.

I would gladly pay 2 bucks a week to get nearly up to date issues of several comics I enjoy reading (comic books should be a hobby compatible with a child's allowance, real talk). I realize a lot of the disparity has to do with distribution and demand issues, but still.

I think the whole thing is a bit problematic, I certainly do understand why the authors would not want their work to be distributed, but at the same time I think it's a problem of the internet. It provides us with ways to get what we want without going through bothersome things like customs/shipping fees/delays as far as releases are concerned.
Naturally, the laws have not quite adapted to this, as evidenced by different censorship regulations, rather unclear laws as far as international distribution is concerned, etc..
At the same time, however, I think that not only the laws, but also the companies, need to adapt to the situation and possibilities imposed upon us by the internet.

If fans want certain series earlier, etc., then why not also put them online for sale? Pretty sure that one reason might be the fact that the publishers are also stuck in contracts overseas, but it would certainly be a step in the right direction if it were possible.
There are sites like dlsite already and they seem to be working well. It certainly does not put an end to piracy, but at the very least those sites reach out to those who'd like to benefit from the internet while paying for what they want, which is a big plus in my book, especially because it won't really change a thing as far as piracy is concerned. Whether people scan the pages or distribute the pages after downloading them from a paysite, it doesn't really make a difference I think, in the worst case it would save them the trouble of scanning/cleaning/translating the pages, which they do for free anyway as far as I know.

That being said, I'll cease reading scanlations since the publishers explicitly ask me to, but I'd certainly like to see them adapting to this situation, for both their own sake as well as that of their customers.

What amuses me a lot about the scan thing is, basically a bunch of kids can take these magazines, rip 'em apart, get some LQ images off some cheap paper, fuck with 'em in photoshop a bit to get some passability (can't really escape some detail loss), and in turn slap some translations on top of it. Relative to high school language courses, a modest manga chapter might be half a night's worth of language homework on the freshman level if going solely by volume. Complexity might throw a wrench in here and there, but slapped on a page alone, manga text doesn't fill a whole lot.

Anyway, these are usually out anywhere from 3-5 days after release if it's a popular series. If kids can do that, why aren't distributors in the production process getting high quality scans to digitize and getting their own translations up for a simultaneous release with the printed media that they could maybe charge a quarter per series for? How much better would things like Berserk or Claymore seem in HQ resolutions? How much more accurate would translations be, especially when it comes to move names you see thrown around and talk with the author could help clarify little this and thats?

These things aren't really made on a week-by-week basis grinding deadline like a daily newspaper. Issues for this stuff are likely done weeks in advance and are merely waiting for the magazine prints and distribution. Would figure the holidays and personal breaks writers also seem to take usually leaves them with plenty of time keep ahead of the curve. So, really, I'm just wondering if this crisis is solely about the industry refusing to adapt to more modern distribution methods and preferences.

I'm sure the current global economic climate hasn't helped, either.

Pretty sad that I've enjoyed Naruto a little more than Bleach the last few chapters/arcs/whichever.

So yeah w/ Gai on the Island now, it's gonna be Naruto + Killerbee + Yamato + Gai vs Kisame.

Also it all makes sense now. Naruto can't control Kyubi with hatred in his heart. The Waterfall of Truth reveals his hatred. Karin saw him as Warm Pure hearted in comparison to Sasuke's Cold Hatred, but then she saw the deep hatred in him that the Kyubi draws out. Naruto will probably learn how pure hearted Killerbee is, and he'll have to find a way to get the hatred out of his heart to control the Kyubi. He'll have to keep going to the waterfall over and over until the "Evil Naruto" no longer appears. Simple and cool, hopefully it's not something that he does in 3 chapters or something lol.
