He bit his tongue so he'd wake up, kind of like that one time someone broke their finger to get out of genjutsu...I can't really remember who it was but you know what I'm talking about.

Unless I'm completely wrong the person being mind-scanned can't be awake, either asleep or unconscious, so they can't alter their thoughts...

Yeah its pretty obvious he bit his tongue to wake himself up, but if you're asleep, how do you bite your tongue to wake yourself up? Could he feel them reading his mind? That's the only thing I can think of - he was in a dream-state, remembering all of that as they accessed it, then assumed that he needed to wake up to stop it, so he bit his tongue, knowing he couldn't move in any other way.

When you put it that way...yeah it's kinda weird. But the Shikamaru thing was a very similar thing if I remember correctly. He was trapped in genjutsu and he still managed to break his finger...so maybe it's some supernatural ninja thing? No clue.
