A side effect includes death though, so it's not something great to rely on. Especially if he wanted to use it with SSJ, which already multiplies his strength (x50), SSJ kaioken would probably instant kill him.
Not to mention after obtaining SSJ, he never was really in a predicament where he needed to use Kaioken. vs 19 it wouldn't have helped him any, vs Perfect Cell he didn't really actually try to kill Cell because he wanted Gohan to, he didn't want to kill Fat Buu because he wanted gotenks/trunks to beat him (a mistake you would have thought he'd learn from gohan v cell).

in the anime (filler arc), Goku did use kaioken while SSJ vs Pikkon, but Goku was dead, so I suppose he wouldn't have died even if it killed him...

Actually, after doing some research. I found that Goku did in fact, do this. Once.
Apparently in the DBZ anime Goku used a super Kaio-ken vs Pikkon.

So obviously it's a possibility and it didn't instant kill him then (though, I guess he was already technically dead at this point). Gotta wonder why someone wouldn't keep doing that if it actually works.

Chakra doesn't even seem all that powerful anymore. Guy took out the shark with almost no chakra and right before the fight it was mentioned that the shark guy had chakra comparable to a tailed beast. An who needs chakra when you got the hax eyes.

Eight Heavenly Gates Release removes the limiter on your chakra flow. Afternoon Tiger was an air pressure punch, but it was basically being fueled by the equivalent of chakra roids. Hax eyes require chakra to fuel them.

And for the DBZ discussion... Goku didn't use Kaioken because of the side effects. SSJ was not only more powerful but far more efficient. A major factor in a lot of DBZ battles is not only power level but endurance. Remember that the reason Goku and Gohan outclassed Vegeta and Trunks during the Cell games is that they "trained" by just staying in SSJ form for a week and learning to manage the energy output. Later on, Goku says at one point that if he had went all out against Kid Buu at the start instead of letting it drag on he could have won, but staying in SSJ3 so long drained all his energy. They blew up Kid Buu at least thirty times, but his physical and ki regeneration rate was too much for them.

I think just because Naruto masters the kyubii wont mean sage mode is retired. They left a lot of potential open with sage mode just to leave it as a forgotten jutsu. An isn't naruto one of the last sages alive now?

I think just because Naruto masters the kyubii wont mean sage mode is retired. They left a lot of potential open with sage mode just to leave it as a forgotten jutsu. An isn't naruto one of the last sages alive now?

Perhaps he'll learn to stay in beast mode longer by feeding the beast Nature chakra instead of his own chakra...

I doubt it though, I bet Sage mode was a one-time thing to beat Pain.

Lee has chakra but no way to use it normally which is why lee relies on the gates and normal taijutsu. Guy on the other hand is perfectly capable of using chakra. Either way there's technically nothing indicating they actually have low chakra and Gai prefers hand to hand combat.

Little silly to think Naruto won't 'release the deadly seal' that instantly raises his power levels at the risk of death, since it's been a staple WSJ plot device since time immemorial. Naruto's used it to my memory at least 3-4 times now (3rd Hokage vs Orochimaru, Rock Lee vs Gaara, that Fatass ninja who's name I can't remember and his magical tube of candy, etc etc)

Beast/Sage Mode is pretty much a lock to happen, it just won't get used willy nilly until Naruto's due for his next powerup, otherwise he becomes an uninteresting, unstoppable god. That's how shonen power fantasy series work.

This was before he turned SSJ. There is no indication at all that he uses it afterwords, except againt Pikkon (Which was actually a pretty wicked fight if I do say so myself). The "Super Kaioken" video that was brought up earlier if anyone is interested:

Super Kaiyoken was filler. It was explained far earlier on in the series that if he had ever used it while SSJ, he'd have died instantly from his body literally exploding from the energy. There's a huge difference between filler and canon.

Kaioken increases the user's Ki output "for a heartbeat" - but it places massive strain on the body. That's why it's mainly used right before impacting for an attack, or when using an energy attack to increase the surge. The way they display it during the Freeza fight where Goku uses it momentarily, is correct. The whole glowy red thing the whole time isn't.

The problem with stacking it with SSJ is that having your powerlevel already increased by that much by SSJ makes Kaioken impractical because of the strain, if not deadly. Using Kaioken to defeat Vegeta basically crippled him if you don't remember.
