No it never was explained. It was implied the third may or may not have stopped the summoning. It was never mentioned who Oro was trying to summon. If it was the 4th then odds are the summon failed due to having no spirit to bring back. There is potential it could have been some one else but overall it's not of huge importance.

Actually, I take back everything I said. It was explained that the reason Orochimaru's third coffin failed/never appeared was due to Yondaime's soul already sealed.

Ya wow I remember him mentioning something about the unable to be summoned because of the seal but not the other stuff. It's interesting to think Kishi planned out little plot points to use later and waiting so long to do so. It'd be interesting to know how much of the story he had planned out for a long time and what stuff is more or less random.

I'm not sure he truly planned that issue out. Assuming no mistranlation, Register to see the NSFW content, suggests that Sarutobi stopped the coffin or at least thought he did. Also, assuming Orochimaru had to use the ritual the way it was demonstrated by Kabuto, he should have known the summoning wouldn't work prior to trying to use in battle, I think.

Edit: Seems more like a retcon attempt which I think people said in this thread when that chapter was released.

I have a small personal theory that the other half of black zetsu is under the other half of his mask, being as he and zetsu obviously have some kind of freaky relationship going on.

And they have the same hair, and you can't argue with hair. No idea how he's going to be killed, he seems kinda crazy overpowered.

Kishi needs to make a chapter explaining Zetsu's past. Zetsu as a character is really nothing more then a plot device.

Did they ever explain how Madara was able to avoid the surprise Amaterasu planted in the Sauces eye? I recall him backing into a shadow, screaming a bit then poof - back to normal.
