I was kinda thinking something like that when I was reading it. If those 6 pains are all people he fought then you can probably think they wouldn't have become pain had they not met Jaraiya. Maybe the original rinnegan (nagato?) did something to Jaraiya that made people who he fought change somehow to eventually become part of Pain.

Ya, that was kind of weird, the chapter before the 6 Pains all jump down at him and you start to see some swirling around Jariaya. That swirling is probably the barrier but there seems to be some events missing in between the 2 chapters. Why did all 6 seem look like they were going to attack and then only 1 did, and it was like a sneak attack, maybe the other 5 knew it was a trap to attack and willingly let the one attack and die just to be able to stab him.

Seems interesting but surely those six aren't the only people Jiraiya has ever fought? If what you say ends up being true or similar to what's really going on, I wonder what it was about those six that made Pain.

Above poster could be right, too. Could just be a big illusion, but I highly doubt they would build Pain up to be this super fuck with six bodies and then go "just kidding, it was just an illusion."

Don't feel like digging it up but Jiraiya was talking to himself or something at one point and mentioned the Rinnengan was able to master all six types of jutsu or something to that effect.
