You answered your own question: it's because they're fuckin' old school. None of that "power of friendship" or "follow your dreams" or "break the cycle of pain" bullshit, for them it was all war and sacrificing for the mission, even at the cost of their friends and family.

I dunno, I liked it. I thought it made about as much sense as it could.

At least you could see some..sort of rational for the Sauce being such a tool. Confused as fuck about his brother, still can't quite figure out why the heck he was the only one to live. Brother's back from the dead, and still brushing him off like old times.

Plus Itachi admitting flat out how he fucked up.

With Itachi under Shisui's genjutsu, I think losing to Sauce on purpose is out of the question. Itachi will either ignore Sauce until he meets up with Kabuto, at which point they'll both take on Kabuto or Itachi will fight Kabuto and Sauce. Hoping for one of those anyway, 'cause it would be a pretty cool fight.
