No, even the "geniuses" like Sasuke and Neji showed that they had to work for what they gained and had their own problems with the stress of being called a genius.

The switch to the Naruto prophecy and the end of that strain of thought in character development (every character basically dealt with similar problems) is at odds with the first part of Naruto.

I put it down to Kishi getting lazy as the story is an underdog story about Naruto becoming a leader and the past motif made much more sense then the current one about peace(or whatever he is doing..). I think the story he is doing now requires much less writing, we had more character development in any of the arcs in first part of Naruto then we have had in the whole second part.

Well, it wasn't THE big bad of the arc, but of one the main villains. If I remember right, we were led to believe it was the woman's kiss or something that stole chakra, as she was also capable of using multiple elements. Instead, we find out it was her hair, which was basically possessing the body as it'd tried to take someone else over when she was defeated. Was silly, yes, but the crack reminded me of it.

Edit: Her name was Fuka, apparently.

Pretty much this. I think the anime delved into it more, but it was an idea that was brought up very very briefly by Kishi and quickly forgotten

I figure the arc, in part, was to get viewers to better sympathize with Asuma before he got killed. Up until then, he'd actually gotten little time. So while his death was important to his team, to everyone else, it'd be kinda meh.

Whilst on the topic of the anime, I just watched the filler from this week with Deidara breaking out (and subsequently getting captured again), does anyone else find it pretty annoying how inconsistent the quality of animation is on this show? To make it worse, they seem to get it the wrong way round and animate the shitty filler really well (this deidara one was actually mildly entertaining, purely because deidara's a great character) and actual important episodes really badly.

No need to post pictures of Pein as a response, I remember how shitfucked that episode was. I don't really watch the anime but if it was all as well animated as this latest one for the important bits (even the slightly less important bits if theyre from the actual manga) I'd be much more interested.
