For a shared hosting package, meaning several sites will share a server, that's pretty standard. FFXI wiki think they need 2 dedicated page servers, a dedicated database server, hardware balancing, tons of technical bullshit that I doubt they require.

The cost of the new servers plus set up fees, and some buffer funds to pay for extra support should an emergency arise would be $12,000 a year. That will get us 2 dedicated web servers, 1 dedicated database server and hardware load balancing. This is a huge improvement and will do a lot for site performance.

They currently list 57 donators who have totted up that $3.3k sum at an average donation of just under $60 each.

The Wikipedia has alot of information, but there's alot of that's incorrect. I wouldn't count on the FFXI wiki, hell I don't even count the real wikipedia, simply because there are far more idiots with power than smart people with initiative.

As someone with a little bit of inside information, I can't say much but I can say this ...

None of the alternative solutions that anyone has posted on here so far would come even close to meeting their needs. They are already on a dedicated box with a 3.4 GHz Dual-Core Processor and 4 GB of RAM. Bandwidth is not the issue. Over 2 million extremely database-heavy page views each day is the issue. The database server averages over 150 queries per second, and that is after several different levels of caching to prevent hits from ever reaching the database in the first place.

It doesn't help that the MediaWiki code base is pretty inefficient.

With PHP + MySQL you can pretty much say goodbye to scalability no matter how efficient the code is.

As a comparison, wikipedia's bandwidth cost are over 200 000$/yr split over 100+ servers.

Edit: It should be noted on their campaign page that they're asking for 12,000 USD to pay for just a year of hosting. Anyone who doesn't find that ridiculous is insane. Hell, my fucking Dreamhost account has 2TB of traffic and it cost me $24 for an entire year.

Their actual claim is that they want $12,000 to pay for 3 physical servers PLUS a year of hosting.

That would be pretty retarded if true, and I would agree with your concern if that's the case. I was under the impression they were purchasing physical boxes that they would personally own, and then rackspace + bandwidth for them.

thats true, ive had 2hr get stopped by para a few times as well. i dont think it actually shows a paralyzed message though, i cant recall its been a bit. the timer does stay at 0:00 and you just have to do it again.
