Finding a Keylogger

A friend's acct was logged into and all of his expensive items were stolen. He isn't sure if someone who had his info took them or if somehow he was exposed to a keylogger. Assuming the latter and we attempt to get his items back for him, is there any precautions we can take or measures to check for and remove a keylogger from his system?

Thanks, but i'm not really too concerned with how he was exposed (if he was), as it won't do anything now. I guess i'll tell him he needs to reformat..

Also, most anti-virus programs find keyloggers these days.
