so my computer has been running like crap lately(ffxi lagging, Firefox is horrid slow, comp freezes on shutdown). been trying to clean the junk off it and i am down these tasks running all the time.

seems like a bunch to me and am wondering if there is a site or program that i could get for FREE to clean up all the non used crap. I downloaded a program on my lap top that was supposed to do this but i ended up having to reformat cause of all the spam crap i got. any help would be appreciated.

Ps: any good site to test my internal computer speed. think my processor got fried when the fan went to shit but would like to test it before i buy a new processor.

start > run > type: msconfig > Startup and Services tab (For services, click hide all Microsoft services)

    Disable anything that isn't necessary.

if your cpu was fried, you would not be able to be using it now.

Seems like you need more ram.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/ will tell you if something is necessary or not. Just type in the name of the program. Be careful though, you have to search throughly because some of the Trojan/Virus programs have the exact same name, it's the location of the process (C:/Win32 or whatever) that will tell you if it is a virus or not.

better still, you can go to administrative> services in control panel and disable some of the bullshit default services (like having a service for scanners running, even when you have none?)

    Msconfig is a good suggestion
Regedit works as well (BE CAREFUL!)

    http://www.processlibrary.com

Go down the list of your task manager and type the process into the text bar on that site. Read it's description, and if it's not vital/used, uncheck it from your Startup.ini tab in msconfig.

Half your entries are from the garbage Lexmark drivers they bundle together.

not quite as concise as some of the sites listed before, but I can usually get away with googling processes I don't know, and if a few sites list it as the same thing, I'll do that. Did that with a CiceroUIWND.exe issue I had when shutting down my comp. Ususally works just fine, but remember to check a few different sites. one listed it as a trojan, the rest told me it was an error with Microsoft's speech recognition program.

also, good place to rate your comp: http://www.pcpitstop.com For rating bandwith, I use speakeasy.net. Just know if your computer or internet connections have anything that artifically boost speed ratings. I know my Comcast service does, so I usually have to half the bandwith ratings I get.
