    Messin with rubik's cubes

Anyone play with these? If so, how the fuck you memorize all the last layer algorithms. I can knock out the first 2 layers relatively quick. By quick, i mean like a minute, which isn't very fast. But that is more or less beginner cubing with very few algorithms and a ton more moves than what is really needed. Just got into messing with them a few weeks ago after i made a bet with a friend that i could learn to solve one in less than a minute if i had a weekend to practice. I failed miserably. 3 x 3 cube btw.

There is an easy trick to finish it (that doesnt involve removing the sticker and sticking them in the right place), but I can never remember it

I can do the Rubik's, Revenge, and Professor's cubes (3x3x3, 4x4x4, and 5x5x5). It's not that hard, just some tricks you have to get down.

    *Gasp*

thats crazy talk, some sort of division by zero would be required.

Pry it open and put it back together. Honestly, there is no "easy trick" to just throw one together, at least not without memorizing a ton of cubie swaps. Can actually do one with only memorizing about 10 moves, but takes like 5 or so minutes. Memorize more moves, you're able to do it faster.

The larger cubes seem to be easy after you are able to fly through a 3x3. With the larger cubes, you just start out building a 3 x 3 and then work around that to finish up the rest of the cube. There was some pics i looked at somewhere of a guy solving a 30 x 30 cube in about 5 hours.

I tried the petrus method of solving it, but got extremely confused extremely fast. Layer by layer is a little easier for me, but last layer gives me hell.

That's how I always solved them when I was little and thought I was so clever.

The part about the large cubes isn't true. Only odd numbered cubes solve similar to the 3x3x3. The even numbered cubes (4x4x4, 6x6x6, and so on) are essentially a completely different puzzle.

I guess it depends on the method used, layer or whatever. You can solve a 4 x 4, 5 x 5, 6 x 6, whatever, by solving all the centers, line up edges with edges of corrosponding colors, that makes like a solid edge corner. Then just solve the 3 x 3 that's left over. Getting to that point is somewhat easy, i say easy, but i still gotta glance at cheat sheets because i fail at memorization.

Edit: What i just typed is confusing as hell, but here's a picture of a 4x4 cube looked at as a 3x3.

The thought of trying to take off all those stickers intact and without leaving sticker goo on the cube, and then trying to reapply all of them.... shudder.

But you cant solve a 3x3x3 like that. It doesnt have a "center" so to speak where you can put your new 3x3x3 in. And if you try and force it to a corner than your normal 3x3x3 solving method will fuck up the outer ring. As I said, and will reiterate, even cubes are different. I guess on the 6x6x6 you could go about it like you said but it'd still be pretty damn hard and you'd have to keep track of where you're moving the outer rims, and then make sure your 3x3x3 moves finish with putting them back into place. Way more work than it's worth, theres a much simpler method.

    the long @$$ way...

after you get one side correct, you line up the middle edges with either
    U R Ui Ri U R Ui Ri
or the opposite way if the section starts above the F side
then when you've done the middle edges you get a cross on top with
    F R U Ri Ui Fi
    then use
    R U Ri U R U U Ri
to get the top middle edges correct
    U R Ui Li U Ri Ui L
to put the corners in the right place
    then
    R D Ri Di or R Di R D
and moving top layer around for each corner that needs to be converted...

they all follow a pattern like that 4th sequence has U Ui U Ui interspaced with R Li Ri L.
there are only about 5 sequences you really need to remember, with practice you could probably always do it this way in under 5 minutes, perhaps as little as 2-3mins.

how to do it in under 1minute? i dunno!
