I would hope that they have a pretty strict process for people they hire to root out criminals.

Its legal because Congress passed a bill saying it was legal, I don't get how you don't understand.

The constitution protects you from unreasonable violations of privacy. Checking your luggage for dangerous materials that would potentially kill everyone aboard a plane, as well as creating mass panic and distrust in a form of travel seems pretty reasonable to me.

Toll booth workers on the other hand don't have this authority.
I still don't see how this is LEGAL.

The constitution is supposed to protect us from that

None of this is in the name of security.. Ponder this.

If they have such unfettered access to steal stuff unchecked, they also have unfettered access to PLANT THE BOMB THEMSELVES.

If I was a terrorist I would just get a job working for the TFA and plant bombs on all sorts of luggage.. I would never get caught
Constitution is also supposed to protect us from corrupt police / police state. Unfortunately, police and security are human beings and therefore susceptible to corruption.

I know several folks that have had things stolen from their house by police when they were there "searching" for other reasons, cash/jewelry that they can pocket easily.

I'm not saying that it's Wafik's fault or anything close to that, this is total bullshit and I'd run it high-high up the flagpole at Delta. However, don't think that them breaking the lock on your luggage is a "sue-able" offense. You're going to lose that one easily.

It's legal b/c Congress says it is. There really isn't any other way to explain it.

Here's another example for ya. There's a giant mall that I usually shop at around my house. Now if you want to park underground on the weekend, you have to pass through a police checkpoint at the entrance to the underground parking area. The police check every single car's trunk for explosive devices.

Now technically the police had no "probable cause" to check my trunk. But guess what........to damn bad. If you want to park there then you agree to a trunk search.

Just like if you want to travel conveniently by plane you are subjected to randomized searches, and the laws governing such modes of travel.

Amendment IV - Search and Seizure. Ratified 12/15/1791.

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

You can scream 9/11, you can scream whatever you want.. I'll laugh at you when you give the government power to do whatever they want and one day you piss off one of the people with the authority to use against you.

The worst part isn't so much that they wanna search bags.. it is having no accountability. I want a piece of paper saying who searched my bag, when, what they were looking for, and what they found. If my bag was secure when they broke into it they better fucking secure it back when they are done.

I'll laugh at you when you think you actually have power over the government, at all.

Sorry but the security of thousands of people > your luggage.

As to "how it's enforced", i do agree. It's a bunch of shit that some TSA asshole made off with his stuff, but to actually make the point that they dont have the right to search your luggage is crazy.

Sweet.. You can actually sue the pants off them now.

They admit they opened it. They admit they broke YOUR lock to protect something you put in there that was valuable.

It costs like $35 to file depending on where you live and you won't even need a lawyer. They will give you like $800 to shut up, lol. Very easy money
I'm sure someone has already pointed it out by now, but I don't want to read through page 2 and 3 of this retardedness. Before you fly they ask you if you have locks on your bag because EVERY airline reserves the right to open and inspect ALL luggage that they are taking on their flights. If you lock your bags they are subject to be opened and checked and not have the value of your lock redeemed.

It is however, quite unlawful for them to open your bag AND take items from said bag. Contact Delta and file a claim. Nothing will probably come from it, but it will get you more than if you filed with the local PD or something like that.

As to the guy shouting "FOURTH AMMENDMENT!". You waive your right to the fourth ammendment when you buy a ticket of theirs. You adhere to their rules from that point forward. If you would bother to read the fine print on an airline ticket purchase you'd know this.

I always just bring video games/systems on the plane as carry-on luggage, not sure if you can still do that though, haven't been on a plane in a while.

How many people have been killed by something being sneaked on an airline in the luggage department?

How many people have had their luggage robbed while going through an airline?

And as long as the second amendment stands, we have power over the government though I don't think we are even close to the point where we need to go there but the terrorist did a wonderful job getting us headed that way but not as well as Bush did.

If you use a TSA approved lock they lock your items back up. Obviously if they have to cut the lock they can't magically re-attach it.

You, as well as everyone else knows your never going to get a report that says who checked your bag and what they checked it for. But guess what... you're still going to fly.

The only thing you can do is to protect yourself as much as possible.

Carry shit of value in your carry-on. It's the only way to go. If you don't want to do that, or the item is too big, there are usually courier services at the airport that will ship the items for you and it will show up in a day or two depending on the shipping options.

Putting anything like a camera and a Wii in your checked luggage just isn't a good idea, not only because they can open up the stuff and steal it, but because I've seen those baggage handlers toss the bags around. They're not careful with them at all, and the right toss or the crushing weight of all the luggage that may be on top of it is enough to bump a cd/dvd read laser off key or break a lens on a camera.

Just ask all those people who flew on Pan-AM over Lockerbie.
The search was legal, the theft was not. I personally would call a lawyer, and/or try to get the claims process going with Delta

Nine times out of ten it's a wii or a DS, but . . . every once in a while . . . it's a dildo. Of course, it's company policy never to imply ownership. In the event of a dildo, we have to use the indefinite article "a" dildo, never "your" dildo.

Are you just missing the bolded?

Its not unreasonable to check if your bag has a bomb in it if theres a reason to think so. "Hey, whats this rectangular box with wires in it? Better check it out" seems pretty reasonable to me. You don't even have to get into the patriot act to have justification for this, though the patriot act pretty much lets the government do whatever they want to you anyway.

The problem is humans can't be trusted, not that the law was violated.

    Yes

Everything works fine until humans get involved.

I called delta up last night, and had to speak to some outsourced indian on their customer service crap.

I spent 1 hour on the phone trying to explain my situation, and it's such BS that it happened in the first place.

    The full story :

My original flight was meant to be DELTA: Monroe Louisiana > Atlanta > Las Angeles > FRONTEIR: San Fransisco. What ended up happening is, when the plane landed in Atlanta, the plane was denied any entry at a gate for 40 mins (mindyou if I wasnt at the next gate by 35 mins, the next plane would have taken off without me). So then they finally let us off, and half the people on the plane miss the next flight.

I go to the delta counter and they rebook me a flight straight from Atlanta > SF, I ask them a billion times if my baggage is gonna be in SF when I do, blahblah, they're all like yep. Obviously it didnt come with me, and 3 days later hi2u missing wii. Seriously I'd have felt much better about the situation if my whole bag was stolen, knowing someone's gone through your shit is horrible. I dont even burn games/dvds , all originals, yay for people who dont steal getting their shit stolen :D :D :D

Anyway, what the outsourced indian told me on the phone was basically I have to file a claim on what got stolen, through a fax, and then 1 week later call back and see if they have it. I.E I'm not getting my shit back.

Not to derail, but this is why I at least have the tools available to burn games/dvds/whatever. I actually pirate VERY little, and when i do it's mainly to tryout a game to see if I like it enough to buy it. Having a working backup of every DVD/CD/PS2 you've paid for is a really nice feeling.

Sorry about the bullshit though, flying can be such a horrid experience. Having a flight plan that involves multiple airlines is a really really bad idea typically, but I too know from experience that if you are flying far enough east/west it's almost a requirement.

I had straight flights from LAX>Atlanta and Atlanta>LAX in September, and still thought it was insanely annoying (mainly because of how busy the Atlanta airport is, being the main Delta facility.)
