I tried to tutor some girl in math when I was in high school. She was a junior, and I kid you not, one of the questions she asked me was "What does f(x) mean?". As in f(x)=x+4.

I just looked at the teacher and was like "I can't do this."

That's nothing lol. I was trying to explain matrix addition to this guy in 11th grade and he didn't get it. It was pure addition. I finally broke it down by saying imagine you have two tic-tac-toe boards, and each one has marbles spread out around the various squares. Then imagine you pick one tic-tac-toe board up and place it directly on top of the other one, marbles and all.

He could add matrices after that, but I could never get him to understand how to add fractions (just basic stuff like 1/3 + 3/5).

That's really depressing. I didn't think people got that stupid.

the "fuzzy math" teaching method in our education system obviously doesn't work, hopefully the schools will come to a sad realization soon.

Just take what you get and divide by zero.

I did this in 8th or 9th grade...how old are you Ikith? This would explain why you were so QQ about your girlfriend actually. The fact that even I know how to do this math and you don't is sad.

The funny thing is... She doesn't understand alot of it. I'm 19 and she is turning 18 next week.

I weep for my (eventual) children's educational future

I thought it was bad when I had friends asking me in HS about what sin/cos/tan meant. Cripes.

Easy way out: just move to Canada... or send them to private school or something.[/url]

I understood it at the time but because of illness and lazyness I missed the test and the makeup but the teacher is awesome so she gave me another chance to make the test up! But the problem now is its not fresh in my mind. I was going to take it to day but after looking over the problem I told her "I would rather do it the final makeup you offered me and get a higher score than do it now and bomb it. But what I need to know now is what is the easiest way to solve for x. The problems follow this layout (This is a layout not an actual problem):
    -5 + 2x = 8x - 4

Please explain it in a way that is fast and easy. Thank you so much BG!
This is how you should solve this problem:
    1) collect all "x" values on one side of the equality
    -5 + 2x = 8x - 4

(Subtract 2x from each side of the equality to cancel out the x term on the left)
    -5 + 2x - 2x = 8x - 4 - 2x
    -5 + 0x = 6x - 4
    -5 = 6x - 4

    2) collect all "non-x" values on the other side of the equality

(Adding 4 to each side of the equality to cancel out the number on the right)
    -5 + 4 = 6x - 4 + 4
    -1 = 6x

    3) divide each side of the equality by the constant multiplier of x

    Dividing by 6
    -1/6 = 6x/6
    -1/6 = x

If you show your work like this, you'll get full marks. I suggest trying this method on some problem sets from your textbook to reinforce it and to ensure that there are no "hidden tricks" that you don't yet know.
    That's kinda unexpected Aurik.
Knowing you are unwilling to give a hand on programming

    Sarcasm?

now you should be able to solve this
    x-7 = 19+x

There's a difference between "help me learn this" and "do my assignment for me".

    All you need is nullity.

... You took Math 086 in college?

I dont think my university even offer that course. The down bottom math class is Trig.

Becuase half the time he'll randomly go back to a problem and be like "oops that back there was wrong, which changes everything, but you guys got it all right? ok moving on."

Clearly the class didn't because over 3/4 of us failed the midterm

Oh boy this isn't a good sign. I saw the problem and immediately thought implicit differentiation. It took me a sec to realize there was ONLY x... Trading sleeping time for homework time just doesn't actually help.
