Bad Timing To Buy a MacBook?

    Hey all,

I was thinking of getting a MacBook, but I was wondering if it's a bad time to? It's been out for almost a year now, so I was wondering if maybe new models are coming out soon that I should wait for?

Also does anyone know where I can keep up to date with info about new mac products? More of a blog than the official press releases because it's usually more informative and to the point.

    thanks

You might want to try running through the Cult of Mac blog on Wired.

It definitely is a good time. The MacBook pros are great computers. They run OSX and the carbon copy that is Windows Vista.

Do they emulate it or run natively? I was actually in the school bookstore today and I saw one of the 17" Mackbooks running it. I didn't get to try messing around with it though.

i've read something about a new line of macbooks coming out in june at engadget and about OS X Leopard being released soon? I assume the OS should be compatible with all macs but the upgrade may be costly? ><

The new Macs all have Intel chips, so no, they do not emulate Windows, they run it naturally.

    Fail.

I own a MacBook Pro, couldn't be more satisfied with it. Mac OS X is much more stable than Windows, and is just a better operating system in general. The issue of running programs/games on a Mac is no longer an issue due to BootCamp, Parallels, and CrossOver/Wine.

You could always install linux/freebsd with a PC.

Unless you're going to be using a Mac for the Mac-only shit that it comes with, there's no point in buying one just to use it as a PC. They're ass-rapingly overpriced for what's offered inside, and their main bonus (in my view) for the average user is aesthetics.

I'm a PC guy but the quote is quite true...

If you're a "techie", you can easily take one of the Linux distros and completely make it your own. Linux is not that hard to learn anymore, and there are blogs/boards EVERYWHERE that tell you how to do anything you want.

If you want the cleanest possible OS with no work involved, go Mac and you should be happy.

I literally can't use a Mac, I'm too into hardware tricks and messing around with overclocking. Basically, you use Apple hardware and that's it...and I couldn't deal with that lol, too boring.

    Fix!

Sorry, couldn't resist. I finally saw Vista in action and it just cut & dry OS X. It's like Microsoft isn't even TRYING to hide it anymore.

OS X leopard will launch on march, as well as an upgraded Mac books. There is no official word on this yet, but all the rumors and blogs saying the same thing. The only thing apple said is they will release it on spring. I would wait for next month and see what happens, unless you really need one now.

You will not regret buying a macbook pro, trust me lol. It runs windows better than most other laptops, except for a few minor issues that will be addressed with the official release of bootcamp (its only beta atm.) oh yeah and full release of bootcamp will be included in leopard, so you wont have to buy it.

Can on a Mac, too. They've had PPC versions of linux for ages now. The x86 and x64 versions will work on Core and Core 2 Macs.

I thought the general consensus of getting a mac vs pc was to avoid all the problems inherent of win xp, but I don't think the OP wants a mac to install windows (and of course, your macfanbois & pcfanbois), no?

Regarding your question, I'd wait a couple of months like the others mentioned if you can afford the new models. A friend bought one two years ago, hasn't had any major problems aside from the mundane ones (OS acting up or w/e).

I bought a Sony Vaio F790G a couple of months ago, no problems yet. However, I'm a little reluctant to install vista lol.
