So if the reason Sony is releasing a non backwards compatible is because of the laser dying, or because the longitivty of the system is in question.. did Sony willingly release a defective product to the NA and JP consumers?

yes, no way the could have totally overlooked all the playback problems and graphical incompatability they had.

Thats just incomprehensible, but, it may be true!

this is turning into console debate

As a consumer, and seeing how well playing PS1 games on a PS2 worked, you would think a multibillion corporation would be able perfect such a simple task on a 600$ machine. After all, they had the technology to do it, but they still failed, they also had the money and time. Oh.. but that is the problem, I still firmly believe that the PS3 was released one year too earlly. If Sony would of waited till this upcoming Christmas, they would have done so much better.

"Sony is managing expectations by saying now that the new console will play fewer of the old games, and that's a good thing,"
that's the best part of the whole article. Its like they know its a stupid move, so they decided to convince us its a good move. what are they expecting?

"Well, they said its a good thing! So I'll believe them!"

if you've ever taken a part a ps2 and fixed on, you'd see that theres is a small gear mechanism that adjusts where the laser positions. the gear rotates depending on the type of disc. gradually over time from all the rotations, it gets slightly closer to the next "clock" on the gear, until eventually its one click off. one click really doesnt do any noticeable difference. my ps2 had stopped reading dual layers, and was about 50/50 on older ps2 games. knew it wasnt under warrenty so took it open and investigated how it worked.

long story short, had to move the gear 3 notches and now it loads up games twice as fast, and 100% of the time. it's a fixable problem, but you gotta go through the trouble of opening the system, and thats a big nono to sony, and a pain in the ass. at this point im keeping my ps2 knowing how to fix it it'll be easy whenever it happens again, because at some point it's bound to happen.

I agree they were a year too early, they had lots to fix still.

They totally rushed it out for holiday season and it sucked balls.

Basically being a Sony fanboy I am(still don't own ps3 yet, lack of titles) I am simply tryingt o dig for reasons as to why they've been so fucking stupid PR-wise so far for the PS3.

They have been a total disaster, I mean I love the product, and the exclusive titles. But the Gong show its been so far is really shameful.

This won't win Sony any more fans. If they remove PS2 playability from NTSC models, that'll delay my own purchasing of a PS3 by a good year or more, judging by the current release schedule.

Being able to play my PS2 library actually goes a long way toward me deciding to buy a $600 system for 1 or 2 games (the next MGS and FF, or anything else that looks great).

When the majority of the AAA games (read: all) on the Playstation brand are on the PS/PS2, removing the capability to play those games on your new system is brilliant.

Granted it is more than the PS3 has to offer at the moment, but that'll change soon.
I love how you're trying to talk down the Wii while admitting the PS3 has nothing.

Is it even logically possible to believe in nothing?

Have you not noticed the Wii demolishing every system in the US and Japan? Developers will develop for the console that has the largest user base and easier to develop for.

Define soon on the PS3? Delay after delay and even a canceled game by a first party developer, I don't see how the PS3 will have more titles to play then the Wii ever.

To be fair to his side of the story he's not saying the PS3 is winning the here and now. Quite the contrary. What he's saying is the race isn't won yet. The Wii has its share of problems including lack of supply in stores and a still-small software library. I still don't see a title on the Wii worth owning besides Zelda and Wario. That's about on par with the 'must have' titles on the PS3. That the Wii experience can be had more cheaply and from a company that doesn't treat its customers like shit is probably why Nintendo has the higher ground at the moment. Fow now I'm willing to give Sony the benefit of the doubt. After all, neither system has an RPG out yet (lol DQ9 on DS) and that generally wins/loses it for a system in Japan, the onry market that matters.

the problem with the EU launch of course is that by the time the PS3 is launched over there without PS2 support it will have a fraction of what other systems (not just the Wii) will have to offer, and I reckon kids will still be getting PS2s for christmas in Dusseldorf, when parents look at the botom line of bang for their euro.

This is probably the worst console war in history. Both lack the zing of the 16/32 bit wars, where each could make a reasonable argument for why their platform was awesome without stretching the truth or hand-waving about 'the future.'

It's OK, Europe never counts for anything in the console wars.

With such gems as 'Blast Processing,' 'Nintendon't,' and Crash Bandicoot heckling Nintendo outside their offices? Sure, it was funny, but not much of any substance. I think the present is actually one of the most interesting times for the industry since it's rebirth in the late '80s.

PS: Mode 7, Parallax scrolling, Super FX chip, Emotion Engine, Full Motion Video, Prerendering, U R not e.

That means Europe counts for something, somewhere.

Which we all know is untrue.

I've said it once, twice, maybe even three times. I am not buying a PS3 until MGS4 and FFXIII are out.

I heckle the Wii because its allready peaked in its gaming potential and popularity. By that I mean Zelda is likely(most likely) the best game that you'll see for the Wii, sure smash bros will be fun for a few hours, and Metroid will look good in SS's, but to be realistic The Wii has used its turbo boost allready in this Race and Xbox and PS3 especially have alot of boosts left. Granted they got some catching up to do...but the race is just getting started and Nintendo has allready blown their load in my opinion.

PS3 will start laying the beats come Fall of '07 and likely never look back. The whole controller fad/gimmick is starting to work its way through everyones system allready. Wii Play's lackluster reception is an indicator of this.

Sony has had an aweful PR campaign, and their launch titles blow Donkey Dick, but they have nothing but a big upside to look forward to, meanwhile Nintendo is gonna take beats come fall when MGS, Assassin's Creed and Halo 3 among others are released. Better hope they get Mario Galaxy out sooner than later, and it better be more than Mario 64 with more levels and bigger environments to save face.

People will realise how not so great it is to play Metroid on their Wii/Gamecube with the inprecise controller called a Nunchuk.

Again this is all just my opinion, so don't take anything personally, lol

And some hippy up above mentioned developers developing for the system with the largest playerbase saying it was the Wii. The average monkey can explain to you that the PS2(which is still actively being developed for) has at least 5 times the customerbase than Nintendo does with their Wii.

I totally agree with you, I'm partial really to wherever Final Fantasy goes. MGS is plus, included in the ride really.
