What Vista Are You Getting?

Recently, I bought a new laptop that had Vista Home Premium pre-installed on it with 1GB of memory.

Needless to say, the damn thing was paging like crazy. It took a full ten seconds to open the start menu. Task Manager was showing 50% memory usage. Whether this was from the OEM pre-installed shitware or just from the sheer crappiness of Vista I can't say, but the first action I took was to burn a 'recovery CD' (as if I needed to recover to Vista) and upgrade (yes, upgrade) to a MSDNAA copy of Windows XP Pro. Now my laptop flies.

I do miss the Vista startup sound though I like that so much.

The only time i go over 8% memory usage with my computer is when im running ffxi+msn+aim+firefox+winamp, then im at around 30. Thats between 2 monitors, i like to keep ffxi in full screen on my 24inch.

only using 2gb ram and a 3700+ processor, vista is more than twice as fast as xp ever was for me. Don't know what you people are doing wrong, but i'm sorry that it's not the same for everyone. If you have no need to upgrade your OS, why would you lol. If XP is working fine for you, why want to buy or bash vista, just stick with what you are using. I needed a new OS, i've used XP for a long time, I jumped on vista and am extremely happy. Just because there are no crazy bells and whistles and the aero interface isn't anything we couldn't do before really doesnt matter to me. I like the windows interface as it was, i barely use the aero features. It's faster than xp was for me by far, so I got more than I needed.

Shit I alt tab everything, other than a different color taskbar and media center, i'm pretty much just running a faster xp.

Edit: just wonder if people installing vista that are reformatting realize that you have to click a few times to get the format hdd option. Otherwise it just installs vista and moves ALL YOUR SHIT to a windows.old folder lol. When i first installed vista i noticed i only had 20gb of hd space and freaked out, fucking shit was still on computer. Took me a min to find the format option while installing, ran alot faster after that.

I highly doubt that.

Producers don't make games to use features of DX10, they make games to turn in a profit. By using DX10 you are loosing millions of potential sales and no one is that stupid.

There are no features of DX10 that outweigh the benefits of lost profits. Eventually Microsoft will release their own DX10 games.

I don't even think Microsoft could legally pay people to release games for DX10 instead of DX9 due to antitrust, though they would get away with it anyway.

They can make it so games run of DX10 but emulate DX9 when needed however to play the game at full copacity you would have to have DX10!

Seriously, I'll certainly play with it on a test box at work, but I'm not putting that crap on my home machine for a while. For home use, I don't see a need until DX10 is mainstream.

I'll probably hop on the Vista Ultimate train if I rebuild my main system. I've got no need to do that currently, though, since it's only used for FFXI and a rare Counter-Strike session here and there, and runs both well.

P.S. After a year or two, maybe I'll get Vista, but I am not going to get it until they spend some more time ironing out the kinks in the "extended Beta". (You know, the one that people pay to join.) And I'll probably get either Windows Vista Smoky Bacon or Windows Vista Dalmatian.
