ATI Radeon Xpress - wrong driver?

Allo. My laptop's card is an ATI Radeon Xpress, and it severely is slowed down in some places in FFXI. Best example is Bhaflau Thickets, where the thing almost goes to a halt re:fps wise.

I put it in wireframe mode to see what's going on, and there are polygons being drawn for no reason, all over the place, like when walking around in sea/sky/anywhere, invisible polys being drawn all over and slowing it down for no reason really.

    Here's an SS example :

    http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/7...tchysl3.th.jpg

The floor where Suleen is standing is the best example I can give, I can't explain it more unless i'm recording in fraps, which I'm not installing on this machine.

I've never owned a more graphically intensive laptop before this machine, and am not really sure about the drivers and such for this card in particular.

    Does this look wrong?

Try turning down the settings in the vid card properties?

    Install the newest drivers? http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html

have you checked to see if HyperZ is enabled? AFAIK, that's supposed to prevent offscreen rendering of objects.

How do I check this? If it's in Catalyst, anytime catalyst opens, it shuts itself down, which might be another lead to the problem.

I'm tempted to use third party Omega drivers, but I kinda had a bad experience on my PC when using them.

Btw I installed the correct drivers for the card, and am still getting the problem :\

The polys are drawn like that for everyone. Just the way FFXI is.

is it a Dell laptop? (or alienware as well now ><)... if so, install the b.s. oem driver.

Also, iirc, the x series in ATI uses system memory. Clean out the crap running in the background, and go to XP SP1 if possible (sp2 sucks so badly on my ATI xWhatever (I forget offhand)... that I barely use it for gaming, unless running an emulator)

I haven't used a Radeon in forever, so I can't recall if RivaTuner lets you enable/disable HyperZ. It should let you fine-tune other options, though.

:S unfortunately couldnt find anything on this that'd fix it, thanks for trying though. This seems to be an overclocking tool.

    the solution

    http://www.nvidia.com

    but fo realz

turn down settings, run at a lower res... um your adapter information looks fine

here's something you can try if you're so inclined:

    boot to safe mode

    uninstall current video drivers

install windows default shitty VGA driver

    reboot

install catalyst again (and make sure you're using the most up to date version thats correct for your card)

Bleh, I found the reason catalyst wasn't working, I had no .net, I installed .net and it installed, however i'm still getting poly's for nothing. I'm going to narrow it down to it just being a shitty card.

ATI laptop drivers are pretty bad. Awhile back I had to find one for my Mobility 7500 so FFXI would even start. ATI's "factory" drivers wouldn't work, any version.

I found a website that writes alternate drivers, i shall look for a linky now.

EDIT OF GREATNESS: I can't believe I found the link, I used the "mobility mod tool" from http://www.driverheaven.net/modtool/

There is a card in the list that looks like yours, make sure the series matches and see if that helps. I was extremely happy with the performance of that driver. FFXI ran much better than I expected with it.

Basically this tool allows you to install the "desktop" version of ATI's drivers, not the slimmed-down ones for mobility. This helped much.
