Bad porn habits, viruses and a slow computer

My younger brother has just discovered internet porn. Looking at the history, there are about 20 sites that he visits daily. My computer is very slow now, its getting to the point where I'm probably just going to have to re-format the HDD and start over, but it will only be a matter of time before it comes to a crawl again because of him. I can't even run a full virus scan because it takes up to 9 hours to complete, but I can still do regular Ad-Aware and Windows Defender scans.

Is there any to block the sites that install spyware, adware or viruses onto the computer? Like Firefox's NoScript add-on but for IE7? I've tried to convert him over to Firefox to avoid these problems, but he still prefers IE7.

easy fix: Disable IE on his account.

Seriously, if it's YOUR system... he is a guest user, and should NOT have administrative rights... at all.

Secure your system. Install an excellent AV like Kapersky (sic) or Avast!
Clear the startups, remove the spyware bullshit. Go to set program access and defaults, click custom. Set default to Firefox. Under add/remove programs, go to windows components and uninstall Internet Explorer. (removes the icon, program is still there. Should stop little hornmonkey) Secure your personal account with a password, and create an account for him that is classed as a limited account (Control Panel >> Users). If he complains, explain nicely that the alternative is he has no access if you have to format and reinstall all your information.

    IE7 has windows defender, but....
Well, it's still IE. He can deal with it, or find another system to infect with virii

Use this and add on any additional sites you want blocked.

Simple solution: dont let him use your computer.

Even if you take away most of his rights on the account he uses, theres always a way around, and nothing stops a young kid from trying to look at porn >.>

Id reformat, put a password on the comp and tell him to f off.

worst case, setup a parental control program, make a few porn keywords and password protect it

If ya using a router you can always add the sites he visits to the "block site" (or even keywords in the sites)

Most, every router has the feature, you can check it by usualy opening a browser and going to... 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 (most routers)

    http://www.neko-sentai.com/images/router.jpg

simple to use, just check the sites... and or just add words you wish to block like "sex" or "porn" and every site with any of those words will be blocked instantly.

oh and don't forget to change the default login of routers!

No programs for your kid to try to figure out how to uninstall, bypass or reconfigure so they cna try to view porn.

IE still allows random things to be installed without asking or saying anything? As much as I distrust porn sites, I don't think your computer would be so slow due to porn.

Is he installing anything, or downloading anything?

It must be. Every time I run an Ad-Aware scan, I come up with the same sextracker files, etc. I doubt it's mine, I rarely go to porn sites anymore.

Nothing that I can tell, he isn't that computer literate to download anything on his own. Anyway, thanks for the suggestions. I'm about to try that http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm to see how it works.

Adware-removal tools often pick up cookies and such, are you sure it isn't just picking up cookies from porn sites? Is it picking up actual installed program files? Cookies don't slow anything down, they just let the site know you've been there before as well as other possible information.

    True story:

My mother essentially had the same problem with her computer because of her husband browsing internet pornography as well. My solution was to educate (both of them) as to why it's generally a bad idea to browse internet pornography and what a bitch it was to clean up after infection (Even girls on the internet have viruses). Ultimately, I handed them a Linux LiveCD, and said, if you ever really just want to look at porn, put this in your computer and reboot it. When you're done, just restart the machine and take the CD out and you'll be back in a pornless windows.

Just keep a light and somewhat humorous attitude about it and it's not really that awkward at all.

I don't really know, I'll have to double check for installed programs next time I scan. It might just be cookies that I'm picking up. But my computer has slowed way down since I first noticed he was getting into porn sites.

Is it slow only when browsing the internet or is it slow on all applications, even when not online? It might narrow down whether your connection is being slowed or if it's the whole computer.

My connection is fine. It's the whole computer in general that is slow. I click on the FireFox Icon and it takes 2 mins for the window to pop up. I tried starting in safe mode and running a full virus scan, but when I came back in the morning, 10 hours later, the scan was still running.

I'm thinking it might be the hardware, the computer has been making a really clunky, scratchy sound lately. I'll probably just buy a new computer to save the hassle of trying to figure this out. This one is like 5 years old anyway.

Clunky Scratchy sound = Dying hard drive.

Up to you to upgrade, but at the very least... would most definitely need a new HD
