Just like you can practically sell anything in this world (especially in fatland, USA) and people will buy it.

Why wont it? You don't need machines and weights to lose weight and gain muscle. They could make one of the 'games' push ups on the balance board. Push ups most definitely help you lose weight.Originally Posted by Funi
There is a LOT you can do with a board like that.
i'd go to the gym if i had time, but between work and school i dont have the time (or the $40/month or so to invest on a membership, not that it matters cause i dont think your statement was directed at me). BUT there are tons of people who enjoy the concept of going to the gym, but either feel uncomfortable about it, or lost due to being left to their own devices about how to make a proper workout routine, or like you said, are just too lazy. for people who legitimately need to go to the gym, it would be a poor excuse to not go to one. for my situation im without a doubt intrigued, but i have to look at it realistically, so im by no means jumping on board (haha pun!) until its out for a while and there are some testimonials. I'd just be happier if i had a treadmill and/or workout bike in my apartmentOriginally Posted by Exoduso

It wasn't directed at anybody, but rather the general american consumer.
I'm sure it can help, but the same thing and better can be achieved at the gym. Sure, I know it's an investment, but isn't everything?
for most people, I dont think the appeal of Wii fit would be the financial savings over a gym membership. its being able to work out while "playing" and doing it in the privacy of their own home. going to the gym isn't the most comfortable experience for some people. hell when I lived on a college campus I was a rat in the gym going 5-6 days a week, but it was still felt kinda akward. but I still went, and if i had a treadmill, exercise bike, and some simple weight sets/lift machines at home i'd be down to repeat my same routine everyday.
I was reading about Nintendo's E3 conference, and for the first time in years they actually had reason to boast. Too bad they could've done the entire conference in 5 seconds by flashing the slogan, "Wii own you" behind Reggie as he walked on and off the stage immediately.
Wii Fit is going to sell a ton, similar to Brain Age and the like, just because people are tools who like to play games with the excuse that its helping them mentally/physically.
Shit like Wii Fit sells like crack in Japan.
Unless you're so out of shape you struggle to do more than 10 push ups, they aren't going to do anything other than increase your chests muscle endurance slightly. The amount of calories push ups burn is negligible at best. Doing something such as cutting out soda from your diet will give you better results than doing 100 push ups every day, weight-loss wise.Originally Posted by Jooeetheplatypus

I dont believe that, from march of last year I cut soda out of my diet cold turkey for over a full year with no real change in my health at all.Doing something such as cutting out soda from your diet will give you better results than doing 100 push ups every day, weight-loss wise.
but more importantly im off to play some metroid. got the ice beam this afternoon before work, now back to the phendra drifts to check out a "gravitational anamoly". whenever I play this game I cant imagine how fucking cool MP3 is gonna be![]()
I cut soda out of my diet cold turkey too 2 years ago, and at the same time also cut out coffee and I feel a hellova lot better than I did before just from that. Of course, I also improved my diet in the meanwhile and started going back to the gym and gaining some muscle weight, which probably helps a lot too.
Anyways, while the Wii Fit will indeed sell like crack here in the US as well, it's only because people are lazy/uncomfortable going to the gym (although it's funny when people say they're not going to the gym because "they don't look the part", while the only way they can actually look like it is if they get off their asses and go there... everyone starts from scratch, even the huge people at the gym and people seem to forget that.) That being said, from a financial and business standpoints, Nintendo are fucking geniuses for introducing it to the US market because they know that the majority of the soccer moms, their kids, and all the random people who won't go to the gym yet own a Wii, will buy it like cupcakes, and for that I take my hat off to Nintendo.
One of the main things about WiiFit is, of course, the way it's marketed. I'm sure everyone here has heard about the "alarming number of obese/overweight" children everywhere around here. These are kids that literally get 90% of their exercise walking through school every day. To busy parents and fitness junkies, it's probably a dream come true to get them interested in ANY type of excercise, god forbid through a "game" or something fun. Likewise, for more casual people, simple excersies, streches, increasing overall perception and body-coordination (I saw a pic of a Mii blocking soccer balls as a goalie onscreen, with their head), all these types of things with the mask of video games, and easy-to-play fun stuff. Is it really that hard to figure out why it's going to be so sucessful? Of course if you go to the gym/run/stretch now, you might be puzzled, but imagine just how many people don't that would REALLY get hooked by this, and probably have a ton of fun/want to do it again, or with friends, whatever. The idea of making a "workout" into something fun like this is brillant, especially since they can do it in their own home, and of course the Wii is good for more than just Wiifit once they want to do something else. As for the pad, it's supposed to be able to sense your body's weight/movement in real time, so I expect that's where the "desire to make other games using the board" came from.
I'm honestly not that interested in it myself, there's way too many games I already want coming out before the year's over, and I'll be strapped for cash as it is, but WiiFit is really a no-brainer. It's one of the best-marketed products I've ever seen, actually. It's almost disgusting to think about how well this game will do, might be to USA as Wiisports is to Japan (read: an astounding, unstoppable behemoth).
In regards to cutting soda out of your diet, in my nutrition class I took last fall I did a project on that, well more like a mini research report.
Anyway, if you drink 1 can of soda every day for an entire year, due to the increase in caloric intake it's the equivalent of gaining an extra 14 pounds of fat, assuming a sedentary lifestyle. And that's just for one can a day.
So, if you cut it from your diet, all things being the same you should lose about that much weight, it you only drink about a 1 can a day average.
Now, this also takes into consideration that you're not replacing the soda with something equally high in calories.
Anyway, this wii fit stuff I don't think is really designed for people to hardcore lose weight. But, there are probably hundreds of thousands, or really millions of kids who have absolutely no kind of exorcise at all in their life. This is something that can at least help them get some kind of motility involved to give them some kind of exorcise outlet. All of these games really at least get a kid moving their arms around and maybe doing something they otherwise never would have. Who knows maybe a kid will try wii fit and realize that it's kind of fun to exorcise and go to a gym.
All I wanted to say is Castlevania SoTN on PSN! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTTTTTTTTTTTTTTSSSSSSSSS :D
Its on the Xbox 360 marketplace too.Originally Posted by CaptainN
Sorry if it's been asked in here... but is the Xbox 360 elite with the HDMI output worth it over the standard one. Will the picture be that much better than a component output?. I have the TV to support it (Sony 40" Bravia XBR), and money is not really an issue, I just want to know if it's worth the extra $175 for HDMI and larger harddrive.
The elite is only worth it if you're interested in putting the 120 gigs to use. I'm fine with 720p resolution, and it's pretty hard to tell the difference between 720 & 1080p. However, the Elite is only an $80 difference, so I don't really know where you're getting the $175 from.
Yeah i realized after i posted that it was ~$80 difference, i guess i was looking at a bundle that was $540something. I don't care about the 120 gigs, but shit, for $80 its worth it to get the black for aesthetics reasons. Thanks for the reply.
The HDMI won't do shit, especially if your TV is capable of showing 1080p through components anyways (mine can, sharp aquos 42"), and unless you're a download maniac you don't really need more than 20 gigs. But since it's only 80 bucks more, it's worth it just because the HDD by itself costs 200.
Yeah, I wasn't bashing WiiFit or anything. WiiFit is a brilliant idea from a business point of view; I'm sure they'll sell millions of copies. Hopefully it will be enough to motivate some people to go to the gym/run/something.Some of the games they have for the board will probably even be FUN.
Regarding the soda thing, if you drink just 2 cans a day, that's close to 400 (from most soda) calories all coming from refined (sugar) carbs; that's a decent-sized meal's worth of calories that aren't filling at all. I didn't mean cutting out soda = you lose weight or anything. Of course if you're still eating over your kcal maintenance level you aren't going to lose weight.
uh? Some guy lost 20 lbs playing Wii sports, any form of calorie burning is better then none. If you eat 2000 calories a day and play WiiFit or you eat 2000 calories and play Gears of war, you will burn more calories playing Wii Fit, there's really nothing to dispute.Originally Posted by Funi
