Point is, Square hasn't given an offical release date, nevermind an offical release quarter. Its nothing but speculation and when you look at previous FF games and their development cycles in comparison, FF13 in 2008 is unlikely.

Development for Final Fantasy XII began in 2001, on familiar PS2 hardware, and the game wasn't released until October, 2006 in America.

I couldn't find the exact date where development started on Final Fantasy XIII, but I know it was announced in May, 2006 at E3. So call it beginning of 2006, or late 2005.

It took roughly 5 years for FF12 to be completed start to finish, although they did have to deal with a director-change, so that could've added a little time. However, when you consider that this will be the first game they make on the PS3, meaning they have to both learn the hardware, create their engine, etc, development time is going to be quite lengthy. Its just not realistic to expect the two PS3 FF games before 2009.

The game runs on the White Engine, an all-new seventh generation middleware engine built by Square Enix for their future games. Both the engine and the game were originally slated to be used with the PlayStation 2 but were later moved to the PlayStation 3.[13] The engine handles advanced audio processing, cinematic cut-scene transition, physics effects calculations and special effects rendering. The White Engine reportedly uses four of the six developer-available synergistic processing elements (SPEs) of the Cell microprocessor to achieve near-pre-rendered CGI quality in realtime.[14] Square Enix recently announced they had licensed Epic Games' Unreal Engine 3 to use on a number of particular next generation titles, but will still use the White Engine for Final Fantasy XIII.[15][16]

A release date has not been confirmed, but in a financial briefing on May 23, 2007 it was shown that Final Fantasy XIII will not be released until after the fiscal year ends in March of 2008.[17] In an interview with Square-Enix's European and North American CEO, John Yamamoto at E3 2007, the possibility of a worldwide simultaneous release for Final Fantasy XIII was mentioned.[18]

Game maker in play for foreign partner

Square Enix, one of Japan’s leading video games publishers, is hunting a partner in the US and Europe to help raise overseas sales to 50 per cent of overall revenues within three years.

Michihiro Sasaki, senior vice-president, told the Financial Times it was imperative that the games maker increase its share of the US gaming market, the world’s fastest-growing, to counterbalance stagnant demand in Japan.

“We need to seek co-operation with a US publisher – we need local content,” Mr Sasaki said at the Tokyo Game Show. “Our strength is in role-playing games and fantasy titles, so it is a bit difficult to appeal to the US market.”

Only 10 to 20 per cent of Square Enix’s revenues came from overseas markets, he said. “Within two to three years we want to make it half.”

Square Enix is known for its popular Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest franchises but Mr Sasaki said American audiences preferred action-type games.

The company is also trying to strengthen its presence in online games, where operating margins are often as high as 40 per cent compared with 20 to 30 per cent for traditional packaged media.

Square Enix, a third-party publisher, makes video games for Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft. It has had very strong links with Sony and produced many games exclusively for the Play­Station 2.

But Nintendo’s Wii and DS handheld games players have leapfrogged Sony’s console in global sales, and Square Enix is aggressively creating titles for the Kyoto-based company.

Mr Sasaki credited Nintendo with helping expand the $30bn global games industry by creating a new “casual gaming” audience of women, children and older people. Square Enix was a “little worried” about the lacklustre performance of Sony’s PlayStation 3 console, he said.

If they hook up with EA, who's also looking for a partner in Japan, you can expect FF13 on 15 other systems.

And there could be a chance the game will be out in 2008 in Japan, but everyone knows there will be another 6+ months for localization so the rest of us can play which would bring s into 2009 at least.

lotsa square stuff seems to be coming simultaneous, including last remnant, so i wouldnt be surprised if ff13 was. also, with ps3 being region free it would surprise me even less with simultaneous release.

Because they'll have to wait the additional 6 months for localization probably more if they do a worldwide release for those French and German people in Euro instead of playing it while that happens.

They're doing it for a very simple reason... a lot of people import stuff as it is, right? Well if your PS3 doesn't need to be chipped or hacked now to play Japanese games, you can just import whatever game you feel like importing and play it (which means more people will import than usual), which might end up hurting their local sales in the long run (and i'm not talking about the desperate people who will have 10 different copies of the same fucking game.. but not everyone will own multiple copies of specific games, but would rather rent of borrow.)

This is probably the reason all the Japanese PS3 developers started stating that they're making simultaneous releases for their games, including MGS4.

Jack Tretton in the E3 press conference said UT3 is coming exclusively to the PS3 in 2007. And he's right.

dont think so, i think they'd have to redo the game for it to work for 360, not saying it isnt possible but isnt very likely.

last remnant was originally supposed to use the engine as well but then they decided to go with the unreal engine as it would have better support for what they wanted to do, and allowed the crossplatform support.
