It's like Mozart being ranked below the Backstreet Boys because the latter is inspired by the former but uses better technology.

Gentlemen and gentlemen of BG forums, this is what's wrong with videogame news media of today.
    Have you played SMG?

It plays completely differently than anything I have ever played. Saying it's not innovative is stupid as hell. It has more innovation in a single level than most games have in the entire game.

It is actually helping. As Xavier just posted, it outsold the Wii in Japan for 1 week, so apparently people are just fine playing PS2 games in their old system. Good for them I guess. I am just happy I got my 60 gig when I did .

Maybe it'll be a sought after item one day .
I figure the lower price + new color helped it out, but mark my words, no-BC makes it just another SKU with a literal new coat of paint. That's a good bump, no doubt, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if PS3 sales went right back down to the way it was before (after the holidays anyway).

And why can anyone possibly be butthurt about SMG having a chance at the top of that list? Even if you don't like the game, you should be able to appreciate it for what it is. I don't know if it will stay there, but there sure as hell hasn't been any game more deserving, at least not this gen.

Guys, the SKU did shit for PS3 in Japan. Thats not why it sold. Dynasty Warriors was released in Japan. Think back to the 360 sales when Halo 3 was released. Yeah. Premium price drop really didn't do as much as Halo 3.

Because some people think the only games which could ever be considered good are ones where all you see of your character is a gun in his hand. Anything other than this is childish. lol (of course there is a little exaggeration there, but the point is made)

    /facepalm

Of course, not enough bald space marine galaxies in SMG. My bad guys, SMG is a blatent failure. I bet they are building little forts and wheelchair ramps at Best Buys nationwide right now with all the extra copies to make better use of the game.

You'll always be disappointed if you're judge every game based on the innovations first seen in the jump from 2D to 3D gaming. What could a game possibly do to be revolutionary at this point beyond bending space and time itself? Beyond sharper controls and better graphics, I don't know what you're hoping for.

I'm guessing features. Bulletpoints on the side of a box. Not harder to define things like 'the best level design ever with tons of new ideas'.

I didn't mention the word innovate once, just so we are clear. But, I guess I should touch on that. People will care if a game is innovative in 2 years, a clear example of this is the Mario 64 I'm talking about right.

Videogame ratings(as flawed as they are) should shift with times with "quality standards" going up. Super Mario 64 set a clear standard, but Galaxy did not. The problem with "a better version of a game great outscoring a great game" is that Galaxy should not be using the standard Mario 64 was judged at. To be honest, I believe games in general have gone up so much in quality that it takes something that is truly mindblowingly awesome to be able to outscore their predecessors that build the current age of gaming. It doesn't have to be some kind of innovative masterpiece, that is, if by innovative you also mean combining game elements.

An example would be Zelda:TP not being the highest rated game ever(or before Galaxy anyway). TP improved on OoT in almost everyway, but because the general quality of videogames have gone up so much it doesn't blow everything away.

That said, I feel gamerankings is rather silly, at least when looked at as the end-all "best games of all time". Games having a different number of reviews from different people/places with different standards(and some of those standards being basically imaginary in the case of sites like IGN). And single list for all genres is kind of silly too for obvious reasons.

Do I think Mario Hype had something to do with it's score? Probably, but like many overrated games, it's good enough to not matter.

Oh and uh, I don't have console preference, so don't think I'm just hating on Nintendo.

What could a game possibly do to be revolutionary at this point beyond bending space and time itself?
Welcome to being a mainstream media. Movies are just about in the same situation as videogames and that hasn't stopped people from making highly-praised movies.

According to the reviews, Galaxy has set a clear standard for level design, playability and shown that the Wii is capable of respectable graphics. You're just talking about a difference of opinion.

It hasn't stopped people from making highly praised games either, you're just discrediting the praise to justify your opinion.

Its easy to always be right if you just discredit everyone who disagrees with you.

Forgive me for being a walking thesaurus. 2 years from now, nobody will give a fuck what game was revolutionary, so what's wrong with a better version of a great game outscoring a great game?

gotta love those general sweeping statements~

4D, and then 5D, of course.

SMG is an amazing game even beyond its gameplay and graphics. I'm at home on break right now and showed my parents the game last night (both of who haven't played many if any video games since LoZ:LttP or Tetris) and both were dazzled by it and wanted to play. It has appeal to almost any gamer at any age, unless you hate adventure/platform titles or think the game is too childish because it does not involve killing.

If anything I'm a bit biased for Nintendo, but I'd say it could hold #1 right now.

Just bought SMG and I don't really like it. Sure it's different, but running around a small globe as apposed to walking across an entire level doesn't really feel all that innovative to me. I got bored quick.

It's one of those things that gets better the more you play.

I suddenly felt like playing Super Mario Bros 3 and World and I got to save, I'm might be having more fun with that actually. Though, it's a real pain in the ass to play with a keyboard.

^I'm the same way, I am currently working on beating every single level in Super Mario 3, something I never completely did. So far I am through World 6 w/o a continue.

Don't think that will continue for World 7 though

And yea I can't believe you guys aren't loving this game, it is surprising, but to each their own.
