I got a PS3 mainly for those two as well... kind of pisses me off now, since all the multiplatform games are better on the 360 (at least for me, I get more out of them because of the time I spend on achievements, etc.), so it only leaves a few good titles until those specific ones come out. >.<
Actually, you can get a PC that can run Crysis pretty damn well for 700ish if you build yourselfOriginally Posted by Po
People love PC because of the open nature of the platform, the mods, the general user created content, the apps, the interface, and certain genres that just aren't on consoles (Strategy and MMO rly.)
btw, I've said this before but it needs to be said again
Achievements are cheap and really are a bad thing. They replace things like 'good game design' and 'enjoying games' with earning useless epeen points.
Fuck achievements.

I remember reading that FFXI got a bad score partly because it's achievements were terrible, I forgot which review had that though lol.
Achievements make you get more of our the game, it doesn't take away from it...
Take Assassin's Creed for example... what reason would a PS3 user have to collect all the flags or kill the templars? absolutely no reason. But in the 360 you can collect them and get the achievement, therefore get some sense of accomplishment for doing said retarded thing. And in AC it works pretty well because it's actually fun, whereas it's usually annoying and boring to collect stuff in other games.
Most 360 games are like this, don't diss it because you dislike the console... when the PS3 will release the trophies, all the sony fanboys will be over that as well.
I don't dislike the console, I think achievements are fucking plain stupid and pointless.
That's not really a valid answer though lol... at least go into detail as to WHY you think it's "stupid and pointless", when you gain more playtime for all the games you play on the console.
Achievements are a good thing.
They promote sales, they promote playing, they're a good idea.
Theres nothing wrong with them.
Because it is pathetic that this is why people play certain games, or play them to certain extents, rather than it just being a good game. If templar hunting really was important, it should have been up to the game dev to figure out a reason to do it. It makes for a much more integrated and overall better experience. Instead we have arbitrary points that shitty devs use to make up for the game lacking focus or reason. Thus my reason for hating achievements: In 10 years, these games that are made for the 360 that had achievements added to make up for shittiness will end up just being shitty games, and as someone who thinks a good videogame should last forever, like a good movie or any other medium, that really distresses me. Not to mention they promote the sales of games for reasons BESIDES how good they are and, frankly, people buy enough bad games w/o it. Fuck that shit.Originally Posted by Exoduso
Cliffs: Achievements mean worse games.
It doesn't mean that everyone plays retarded games to raise their achievements... but the games you DO choose to play have more replay (and play..) value and it consumes more time if you go after the achievements, ultimately providing you with a better experience and a better feel that your 60 bucks were spent wisely.
I think online achievements are dumb and never care too much for them, but achievements for games like COD4 and AC are genius... and I don't go after "cabala's hunting" or w/e that shit is called just for achievements, I do like achievements in the games I CHOOSE to play though, and that's a whole different thing and probably the point you're missing.
Your conclusion doesn't match your process.Originally Posted by Maxxthepenguin

Don't buy a shitty game. There, half your bitching is gone.
Either you can't word your point right, or you have no point
But you are a well informed gamer (if such thing exists) Maxx is talking how the masses praise the achievements like the second coming of christ. -An exaggeration on my part, but you get the idea-Originally Posted by Exoduso
A good example of this is my brother collecting Halo skulls by going to that specific mission and collecting said skull. Rinse and repeat for the rest. Lame if you ask me.
Oh and Call of Duty 4 is very good, and looks awesome on 720p >.>
I understand that there are people that rent that Avatar game in order to get 1000 achievements in 3 minutes (yes it's possible and stupid..), but not everyone does that.
Same with with the Halo crap... if that's an online thing to do, I wouldn't even care for that (and the reason I hate online achievements... they make people do specific things over and over, makes online gameplay very lame which is why Gears of War sucked online for me... Call of Duty seems to have a much better job at it since all its achievements are offline, and they have different kind of "achievements" to complete online that have nothing to do with your gamerscore.)
If the game would have been shitty without the Achievements, it would have been a shitty game. Instead of making it part of the game, they are spending their time and spending their brainpower on things that could have been part of the game. As in a real part. Instead of getting Achievements for killing templars, they could have given some kind of "tangible" (if you can use that word for a video game) reward instead. Devs should be aiming higher than that and it's a real shame when they rely on achievements to make their game have focus and replay. Compare with (you're gonna love this) Mario Galaxy. People are replaying it because they just enjoyed it. They finish all the tasks because the tasks are fun to complete for the most part and there is a pretty cool reward for doing it. That is how these games SHOULD be done.Originally Posted by Exoduso
It's all interrelated, they are not independent points. In our society, what sells best is what is most likely to be produced. That does not mean it is the best thing out there, it just means that people bought it for a shitty reason.Originally Posted by Falconblade
My point is fuck achievements and their lazy game design encouraging habits.
I don't think people will say their PS3 versions of COD4 or AC are "crappy" by any means... they just have less replay value offline (in cod's case it's offline..it's the only mode in AC.)
Killing templars is a fun thing but like I said, not all games do it like that and as a result their acheivements suck (which is the reason I have games like Blue Dragon where I have 30 achievement points because working towards any of them is useless and stupid.. but for other games where it's actually FUN, I don't mind..)
I do realize there are those that will replay blue dragon 5 times to get 1k/1k, but I just don't care.. I get 1k/1k in games that I enjoy playing (like call of duty of AC... going back to those two only because they're the recent ones i've played heh... I also have 1k points on Oblivion pre-expansion pack, etc.)
I get where you're coming from... but it's fun in some cases, which is when I actually go for it.
Ok so you understand where I'm coming from but disagree because you find yourself exempt from achievmania?Originally Posted by Exoduso

In any case, they could have come up with a better reason to kill templars than achievements but they didn't and instead relied on those pointless scores. You may find that fine, but I find that sad. It just means it is wasted potential.
Achievements don't take a long time to do. A friend of mine took a day, less then 8 hours to do the icons for the Bully Achievements and picking out the achievements in a well designed game wouldn't take long either since it's in the design. There's probably some counter variable for all the templars, or counting kills or w/e and I'm sure the 360 framework makes adding achievements as a simple function call.Originally Posted by Maxxthepenguin
I'm not a fan of doing achievements but nothing wrong with them since if lets you fully complete a game you enjoy in a logical manner. It's nice to have milestones to reach and it doesn't take away from a game. Obviously they're not stupid because LOTs of people enjoy it but I find it kind of funny achievement hating people on a MMORPG message board since to me, FFXI is just a big ass achievement system with a social aspect to it.
