He puts to words well what Sony does have going for it with the PS3. Now they just have to not fuck it all up! Only time will tell whether the PS3 becomes a bonafide success like it's two older brothers. I wish them luck, Microsoft and Nintendo, too. When asked about the high price of the PS3 in PAL areas, especially in the UK (where Sony’s console is currently being sold for GBP 425- US $840- more expensive than anywhere in Europe) this is what Ray Maguire had to say:

“If you take what's considered to be the most expensive and the least expensive – consider the US with its massive land and cheap people. Then you look at the UK – a little island where rent and rates are at an absolute premium, and the cost of people is a lot more. The cost of retail is vastly more in the UK than it is in the US and that's before you even stop to consider the US doesn't have VAT at RRP, they put a small amount on afterwards. Whereas, we get stung by 17.5 per cent. And pity the poor Irish and places like Sweden.

But we have to remember this is no different to selling a cup of Starbucks coffee or a McDonald's hamburger. This is the cost of living in the UK. It just becomes another barrier for us to get more product into the marketplace because the price needs to be set higher to get from our factory to the consumer.”

You can connect any bluetooth device you want to the PS3... I have my regular cell phone one connected and it works just fine....and you can find an HDMI cable for 30 bucks.

And he didn't add the price for the HD-DVD....and if you add the numbers up, he claims the HD-DVD costs 60 when it costs 200.

Yeah, he needs to redo that chart heh.



EDIT: lol I just realized that the elite won't have WiFi either... they're persisting on making you pay 100 bucks for that dumb adapter (when any normal PC one sells for like 30 bucks) aren't they?

Luke mentions that he only used first party accessories for this comparision and that you could probably find cheaper third party devices. But yeah, he fucked up on the math for the 360's costs.

Well he fucked something up... and you didn't include the wireless adapter he wrote down... and even though he's right about the expensive Sony 1st person add-ons, you don't need to buy Sony branded stuff to make them work just like the originals.

But yeah, I definitely like the look and the 120gig and the most important thing me not having to switch cables every time i want to play the wii or the 360... but idk if it's worth that much money unless the old 360 trade in is worth it.

I do want to actually let the dust settle and see if GS/EB will still pay what they're offering right now for the premium 360 + HDD/controller/cables/whatever else they want to make the price higher, because if it's at a decent price, getting the Elite won't be so bad. The second day was indeed better though. If I remember correctly, most of the retailers in the UK shut down after word of the free TVs and limo rides home got out, knowing they would not be able to give anything similar and fearing rioting, so that shot down the midnight numbers.

It will be interesting to see if the sales will keep up (even though that many sold, the system did not sell the majority of the units available), but now Sony is at least into the 2 million sold+ mark.

The new processer reads DVD9 faster than the HD DVD drive does, and if they added it built in their price point would not only rival Sony's 60gig, but hurt their sales as a whole when Bluray wins the format war.
