They're essentially selling MGS at a profit to the 20% of next-gen gamers who already bought a PS3.

Edit: I can't understand why Sony would be dumb enough to do this. If anyone were to go out and buy a PS3 for one game it would have been Metal Gear Solid. You're basically taking all would-be sales and saying "here take the game for free lol. We can't get enough people to buy the system anyway"

Like I said, if anyone was going to buy a PS3 for one game it would have been Metal Gear Solid. Giving it to people for free makes 0 sense unless Sony is that desperate to get consoles in homes. I can see Sony bundling MGS4 to tie up exclusivity. Bundling the game guarantees it won't blow on sales. Resistance and Motorstorm have both done extremely well due to bundling.

They use them as a "last resort" to spike sales. Which is why you've never seen Nintendo sell Wii's with a special bundle. And even if you see companies put out bundles, it's usually with some obscure/old launch title that have been stockpiling at their headquarters.

In other words, Sony is basically saying "here Kojima, you can take 100% of the profit made off of Metal Gear since we don't think we can get enough fans to buy PS3's and purchase the game themselves."

I'm not one of Sony's business analysts, so I don't know. Based on the move though, I'd assume it's to push more PS3 into homes to increase software sales (blu games) in the long run. Now that Blu is the king, there will be a bunch of new players introduced selling for less than a PS3. Sony is forfeiting at least 60-70% of the profit they would have made had they not decided to give the game away for free.
