DVD video playback on Wii..
Basically the only thing holding it back from being able to play DVDs is a firmware update correct?
As far as I know the Wii disc format is DVD so it's playback is a software limitation, not hardware.
Haven't found any info if Nintendo plans on allowing DVD playback any time soon.

I understand this to be incorrect. You can actually play DVDs on a Wii with a hardware modchip. Reading a DVD format and playing a DVD movie are not the same thing however. The laser burns itself out much much faster while playing a DVD movie. As I understand, the laser reads at a much much faster rate with movies, as opposed to games, thus, decaying your hardware much faster over time.

Edit: If you are that hard up for playing DVDs through your Wii and you have a DVD player on your PC, there are programs that allow you to stream movies from your PC through your wii.

I was gonna get it too, but I will have to agree with Exo (?) in that is barely a demo, only 6 tracks :/ there are few options for decent racing in playstation though.

Thanks for the info. I'm not really too interested in playing DVDs on Wii, I was just interested to see if it will possibly have the potential in the future.

really tho after seeing the high failure rate of ps2's due to laser issues, why would anyone want to play dvds on it.

Are you talking about GTP? Come on mate, you get 70 cars and online play too (on top of the 6 tracks).

I don't do online, and I'm a nurburing (spelling) fan even though its been whored to hell since GT4. Having 70 cars means very little when the game forces you to race with certain cars in order to beat cars of the same class. The DVD version is worth the price if only for the bonus video.

Plus if your selling point is the online feature, well...

at this point i dont really think anything. the demand for it is going down with each title, i keep hearing customers saying how they arent going to get it, or theyll wait for it to drop in price cause its the same game with better graphics all over again.

This game looks like a bigger leap than what the three GTAs were(actually, they were expansions so you can't blame them for being similar). I think there is a bias running around against GTA, but you won't see it nearly as much as you should for Zelda or Call of Duty.

What will make ME want GTAIV? Controls that don't make me want to cling to every mario game I own in hopes that some of the actual usability will rub off.

Maybe GTA can trade for its decent camera.
