The way realistic people have traditionally treated reviews is that they find a reviewer with similar taste according to what you've agreed on in the past and trust that reviewer.

Arbitrary numbers according to some scale of individual attributes added together just doesn't end up meaning the game is fun and/or effective in its purpose. It doesn't mean that it's not a retread and a stale concept. It doesn't mean that the game, overall, is good or bad.

I've got lots of vacation time, so I've got my days off setup so I'll have 9 straight days to play this.

i've been waiting for this game for so damn long, the only thing i'm hoping won't suck is that the only flyable machines will be helicopters. I realllly liked the jets and planes in the last one and thought that'd be something pretty easy to carry over. I always wished in the first ones they'd add planes and i'm disappointed they are removing them.

other than that this looks like it'll be a game to last for a long time. 4/29 can't come fast enough.

I think it's fine if that person reviews all games as long as people notice how horrible his taste is. I, and most gamers, wont listen to him but his existence shouldn't piss you off.

See, acknowledging that somebody else might like or not like the game is one thing. But letting it affect the overall tone and rating is where it goes so terribly wrong. The reason I don't trust ratings at all is because they don't stay true to themselves. If they say "I love this game and enjoyed it the whole way through, but not everyone will" I'm cool with that, but if they do that then give it a score of like 7 I wonder why they tried to be somebody who they aren't. Now, 7 shouldn't be as 'low' as it is, but in most cases 7 is considered kinda crappy so I treat 7s as the gaming websites tend to.

Now, there is one thing of objectivity I haven't touched upon that is necessary: experiencing the game in front of you and not worrying about anything else. There are so many games out there with hype coming out the ass and game reviewers won't give it anything lower than a 9 because it's well known as a 'AAA' game, even if they enjoyed and/or were affected by other games that were rated lower a helluva lot more. They let the coverage they've previously done dismiss boringness or bad level design, or something like that. An example we will all agree upon is 'Enter the Matrix'. I remember Game Informer rating the game an 8 because (not verbatim) 'at this point in time, this game is fun since were so hyped about the Matrix sequels.' That is obviously utter bullshit, but there are examples of other games where the problem is the same, like Halo 3. This game, which many people just plain don't like, for some reason had only 2 reviews of 86 under 80 on gamerankings (and only 12 others under 90). I see that and think almost everyone will like it, which is not the case. I see Brawl with the lowest review on the interweb being 80% and think "what about all the people I know who just plain get too confused to enjoy it?" Both of these games had huge amounts of hype, seen as some of the biggest games for their respective systems BEFORE they were released. Now, I think Brawl's hype is 'purer' because it wasn't from the largest advertising effort ever in the gaming and instead just a slow trickle of information and otherwise 99% just the fans, but I might not be the best person to judge that, but that's an aside.

To sum up: Fuck hype, let reviewers say a game sucks if they think it even if there is a massive hype machine.

And FUCK ALL OF YOU GUYS who whine when a game gets a lower score than you want. Reviewers are allowed to have their own opinions. If Gerstmann gives Zelda: TP an 8.7, don't whine about it, it's his opinion and he's allowed to have it.

PS: I trust Gerstmann's integrity greatly but I don't trust his reviews for myself because he has such different tastes. That's an example of how reviews should be done.

The score doesn't mean shit if there is no text to explain it, but like I said, a good reviewer will explain how it's scaled, and what made it go down. It's easy to start from that point and adapt it to your own preference.

Sadly, it's not the format most reviewer are taking nowaday. They are just stating their impression without putting much thought in them

this makes logical sense, but it still stinks.

I read a 9 page interview that was done with 2 of the developers though and it sounds really awesome hearing how they went about making it and what the schematic of the game is.

The cover system in it sounds like it'll make gunfights really awesome.

Anyone's GameStop gotten the bonus disc in yet? Mine says it'll be here Thursday... I pre-ordered the game, even though I'm picking up the PS3 bundle, just to get the DVD. I'll cancel the actual game pre-order eventually.

Getting so pumped for the new CoD4 maps, I can almost feel it. They confirmed the 4/10 thing was incorrect and they are indeed coming out late tonight, early tomorrow morning.

Now if they would just get rid of Wet Work. Seriously IW please drop that fucking map off of a 50 story building and let it get run over by a freight train. Why everyone in the room does not skip that when it comes up is beyond me.

I like both maps (Bloc and Wetworks). Bloc is easy as hell to get around in. Sometimes you can just run right down the middle since hardly anyone expects it (prone every so often just incase), but usually going around the side of a building with smoke or flash grenades is enough to get you into the building. Then it's up to you to cause havoc. Wetworks is pretty much the same, penetrate front lines with smoke/etc and own everyone from behind.

smoke grenade. I especially love throwing smokes and completely avoiding them since people LOVE throwing grenades into the smoke.
