Here's the major games coming out in 07 for both systems i think. RPGs in bold

    PS3:
    Heavenly Sword
    GTAIV
    RE5
    GT:HD
    Motorstorm
    Killzone
    Tekken 6
    DMCIV
    Lair
    White Knight
    Unknown realms

    360:
    Fable 2
    Halo 3
    Mass Effect
    Bioshock
    Infinite Undiscovery
    Two Worlds
    Lost odyssey
    Blue Dragon

    Alan Wake
    Ninja Gaiden 2
    Trusty Bell
    Cry On

    Circle of Doom
    RE5
    GTAIV

FF13 won't be out til late 08/early 09 so I'm not sure why people look forward to that. Is there any other RPGs the PS3 has on the horizon?
Thanks for that, it's a nice list. Oh, and I'm not 100% on LO, but I know enough about Blue Dragon to say with 100% certainty that I will enjoy it. There's a reason it sold so well in Japan, and it's one of the few games on the list with real in-depth info. I'll keep an eye on the rest, but if even half of those other RPG on 360 are good, it's gonna sell me one. Right now, unless FF 13 or Versus is incredible (read: VERY incredible), the only thing I can think of selling me a PS3 would be KH3...PS3 is starting to look like Xbox to me, a few really good games on it, but nothing I can't live without.

If I remember correctly blue dragon was on the top 10 selling list in japan for a hot week and it fell off nor did it push any 360's in japan. So its hard to say if it really any good as they make it out to be. A lot of those 360 RPG's wont see light of day till 2008 for example Cry On , Fable 2, Lost Odyssey, and Infinite Undiscovery. I do completely agree PS3 doesn't have much when it comes to RPG's for its first year.

It has it's own unique features (like the Shadow's special attacks and evolving), but besides that, it borrows heavily from both DQ7 and 8, 7's class selection and skills (you can change classes to suit your preferences, and you can equip skills from one class when you switch to another, but can't equip all the skills you learn at once to be all-powerful, ect, consider it like Blue Mage point allocation in FF11). It also borrows from the DQ8 voice acting, battle scenes, and art style. It's a 5-man party once you get all of your characters, each character has a different shadow, there's 9 different classes, and it's a big world. It's exactly what I want in an RPG. And considering how few 360s are in Japan vs here, it sold VERY well, to even get on the top 10 for any time at all. It sold about 100,000 copies in that time, and the 360 base there isn't much higher than 200,000 I believe.

I assume PS3, like all the other systems, will get RPGs as time goes on, but they have to be announced with a name before I can even consider them, and PS3 definitely doesn't look like it will be specializing in RPGs anytime soon. As much as Xbox didn't impress me, 360 is getting a much wider variety of games atm, more than the PS3 will get for awhile. And with Wii getting the franchise titles/VC stuff, and the 360 getting all those RPGs, sadly the PS3 just isn't impressing me...

it was quite a while before PS2 had any decent RPGs, the first ones I remember were some first person RPG which had a guy with special rings (quite liked that game really), the other was everquest, or some shit game. The last I remember was emphemeral fantasia or something. Really, the first true great RPG I remember was FFX, then a lot more started coming out.

You also forget it's taken the 360 at least a year before it started getting any good RPGs, given that the PS3 has just come out I'd say give it more time. Also, where are the RPGs for the Wii? That's something I wanna see.

Considering Blue Dragon was bought by like 75% of the 360 playerbase in Japan, was being packaged with the 360, and sales of the 360 jumped by like 100,000 when the system was released, I'd say its probably fairly impressive. At the very least, it doesn't suck.

You have to keep in mind that the Xbox 360 install base in Japan is rather pitiful, so even though a game only selling like 100-150,000 copies may seem crappy, when its like 75% of all Japanese 360 owns buying the game, it probably says a lot.

Not just RPGs, the PS2 sucked ass at the beginning in general, and didn't start putting some good games out there until 5-6 months after it's release...same thing is happening with the PS3, but i'm pretty certain that eventually it won't matter what people think about it or how much they laugh about it, because the game lineup will make you buy the system regardless.

Mmm...the PS2 didn't actually have a lot of RPGs released for a while, but they did at least have the "these RPGs are coming out, they have a name and you can look at some screen shots". They just don't have nearly as many in the allocated amount of time. I need them actually announced to look at before I will consider them coming out. I thought the Xbox would get a few more RPGs since they did come out with a few good ones, but they didn't, and the ones they had I could all play on computer, which meant I didn't HAVE to buy an Xbox to play them, so I didn't. If I get the chance I'll do the same thing with any other system without exclusives, especially the more expensive PS3.

As for Wii RPGs (not including the VC, although Super Mario RPG is supposed to be out soon), the closest ones I can think of are Super Paper Mario, in April (although they said they strayed a bit from the RPG elements of the last two games, so I don't know how much of an RPG it will be just yet), and the next Fire Emblem installment, which is due in the second quarter of '07, which is sometime in the next few months, so that's two due out fairly soon. After that, there's FF: The Crystal Bearers, Dragon Quest Swords, and a few other RPGs that are still untitled (though announced), but those most likely won't be out this year.

I didn't expect the PS3 to come out with RPGs right away, but if they aren't even announced, I have nothing to get my hopes up, and considering how the PS3 is still not doing too good, I'm probably gonna be stuck waiting longer while potential developers "wait and see" what happens. In the meantime, the 360 keeps getting more titles. I actually bought about 10 games total for the PS2, and I think 8 of them were RPGs. If half of those 360 RPGs are good (and Trusty Bell looks really nice, the rest (besides Blue Dragon), I'm still not sure on, not enough info outside of a few screens or unfamilar/new types of gameplay I might not like), that will be half of my PS2's library already, in only 2 years, plus 360 has some nice non-RPGs I can get afterwards that I wouldn't have bought the system for, but are nice to have on the side, like GoW. I'm always probably gonna be waiting for the PS3 to come out with new stuff, and buy it if I like enough of it, but I'm not going to consider it before it's there. 360 has actually interested me a lot faster than the PS2 did, which surprised me (I got PS2 for KH1).

Wasn't there something called Evergrace? or something lol

There was also Dark Cloud pretty early. I'm told that's an RPG, even though I've never played it. My PS2 was initially used to replay Xenogears and also for Chrono Cross until games like GTA 3 and then the major major releases started appearing.

The Bouncer was out rather early as well...

And Dark Cloud 1 and 2 are pretty good games, you should give them a try.

The first .hack series was pretty decent too, and people seem to forget about it rather quickly.

    And zomg Radiata Stories.

PS2 was an RPG machine to say the least... I hope Sony keeps the trend going with the PS3.

The difference was the PS2 had no competition with Sega running out of money and the PS2 was the clear winner. This time they're getting beat by the 360 and getting their ass torn apart by the Wii. Also, with the costs of producing games these days, there's no incentive for developers to keep exclusives on the machine with the most difficult to program architecture and the smallest market share.

Regarding the impressive game lineup, those are years away and by then it'll probably be too late. As a developer would you rather make a game on a console with 10-15m user base or one on a console with 30-50m with 1/3rd the effort. PSP vs DS repeat.

Radiata Stories, Shadows 2 and 3, KH 1 and 2, Suikoden 3 (didn't like 4 or 5 enough to buy them, but I rented and beat em), Disgaea 2 (friend got me hooked on 1, so I played and beat his copy), FF12, Okami, Beyond Good and Evil (forgot this one earlier, shame on me), and Tales of the Abyss make up my PS2 games that I have. Dark Cloud 1/2 was ok, but the story progressed waaaay too slow for me, by the time I got to the end of a dungeon I almost forgot what I was doing there. .hack's story was great but the gameplay was boring and the AI stupid. I never played the Bouncer, but I've heard it was ok.

So yea, I bought the Ps2 for zee RPGs, and if I buy a PS3, it will probably be for the same reason. As soon as I start seeing some real effort put into that area, I'll more more interested in it, but not until then.

Say what you will, let's see how you talk in about a year when the PS3 will have about 20 good. solid titles heh.

I do agree that right now the Wii is kicking its ass in terms of sales, and the 360 has better games though...but it's only temporary IMO.

I am kind of surprised at the lack of RPG titles being announced... unless they're actually being worked on but Sony won't release the names out for whatever reason.

Ah yeah, it was called Evergrace lol, god what shit. Dark Cloud was also a good RPG, but kinda simple.

Also, I remember the PS2 having no RPGs for a long time, I guess I worded it wrongly but the first PS2 RPG I remember playing was the ring one, the first decent one I played was probably Summoner? I can't remember that far back lol

First RPG release is gonna be Enchanted Arms..... 23rd of this month.

I heard the game is pretty good until the end phase's, where the game seems to lose its quality.

Also being released along side E-A is Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion... on not so much of a port but a complete overhaul by the developers...

    ------

I really dunno why so many think the PS3 has a shit line up...

    Ridge Racer IV
    Resistance
    Virtual Fighter

    and soon -

    Motorstorm (2moro release)
Armoured Core 4 (23rd of March)

You guys can call it a shit line up if you want... but there is more than enough being released for the Casual and Hardcore gamer in my opinion.

Going back to your rumble controller discussion from a couple pages back.
Sony execs (Harrison I think) said rumble is not important to them. And that it is a "last generation" feature. Sounds like the only way to get rumble on a PS3 controller is gonna be from lolmadcatz or lolnyko.

Yea, I tried it, and it was pretty annoying.
I got a few hours in, and the characters just talk you to fucking death, and none of them are really redeeming.
