Live Streaming ESPN Coming to Xbox 360?

The Xbox 360 may soon become the ultimate go-to console for gaming and content: Microsoft and Disney have had "in-depth talks" about bringing live streaming ESPN content to the Xbox 360, the New York Times reports. According to anonymous (and vague) sources, Microsoft and Disney would bring ESPN to Xbox Live for a "per-subscriber fee" and thus trounce the competition in terms of media available on a gaming console.

The Xbox was once the only console that allowed users to stream Netflix Watch Instantly movies over Xbox Live, but now that its major competitors -- Sony's PlayStation 3 and Nintendo's Wii -- have both added the Netflix feature, the Xbox 360 is in need of an extra boost to set it apart from the rest of the pack.

The question is whether or not Xbox Live subscribers would be willing to toss out extra dough to watch streaming sports. While some believe Microsoft should stop charging for Xbox Live altogether, I think that no matter the price tag, users will dash towards the media evolution of the gaming console.

Last March, Microsoft and British mega-broadcaster Sky announced that live Sky programming would be streamed on Xbox Live overseas. At the time, Microsoft didn't say anything about making similar deals in the United States, but it was a safe assumption that such deals were to come. Though both Microsoft and Disney declined to comment on the New York Times story, and one of the anonymous sources said the "deal was not imminent," the popularity surge for streaming content on videogame consoles suggests that unless something majorly political happens between the two giants, they'd be foolish to pass on a deal like this.

This excited me. Keep in mind that came from Peter Dille, the prick who flat out coldly said PS2 BC would never see the light of day on PS3. I remember reading that interview, coming from him I am sure it won't let down.

So after having a 360 launch system for how ever many years, the one time I decide to move it slightly it red rings on me. I had a good run with the system, guess it's time to replace.

    Spoiler: show
Rumor: PS3 Cross-Game Chat Restricted to Paid PSN Subscribers

Sony has previously confirmed that PS3 cross-game voice chat is coming, however, the question now is whether it will be offered only to paid PSN subscribers as part of their upcoming service in 2010.

Today GamesThirst.com believes that is the case, based on an excerpt from the latest issue of PlayStation: The Official Magazine (PTOM).

To quote: "Aside from the 3D goodness, cross-game party chat is the obvious "next big feature," even though it might be restricted to paid [PSN] subscribers."

Earlier in the same thread speaking about motion controls, the writer said this:

"Sony's current service is one of the PS3's best features, so we'd begrudgingly welcome a revamped PSN with extra subscriber functionality, like cross-game-chat and exclusive PSN downloads."

Rumor: Sony to Remove OtherOS in Next PS3 Firmware Update

According to Owen Stampflee, a Linux Product Manager at Fixstars Corporation, Sony will remove OtherOS in the next PS3 Firmware update due to the recent GeoHot PS3 Hack.

Although this comes as no surprise to PlayStation 3 Slim owners, where OtherOS is already removed, it would contradict Sony's previous statement to standard PS3 owners.

    To quote: "Everyone,

I've caught a rumor from a reputable source that the next firmware update for old PS3s will remove the OtherOS feature...

I'm not sure if it's true or not but it's in the best interest of the YDL community to spread the word.

    Cheers,
    Owen"

Sony Files a Patent For a Universal Video Game Controller

Sony's recent patent filing indicates that a universal video game console controller may be joining the trend of such devices including universal TV remotes.

The Sony patent, which was filed in August 2008 but appeared online on February 18 of this year, reads to quote:

"Just like remote controls, game consoles, and thus game controllers, are becoming widespread. It is not surprising to find more than one game consoles in a household, especially when competing game console manufacturers attempt to attract unconventional consumer groups in the gaming industry.

As understood herein, it would be useful to have a universal controller that would be able to work with a variety of game consoles."

This controller would feature a touch sensitive liquid crystal display that would display various button layouts depending on the consoles. For example, a Nintendo console would pull up a Nintendo controller layout, a Microsoft console would pull up a Microsoft controller layout and a PlayStation console would pull up a PS controller layout.

The patent also notes that this controller will have a speaker and rumble. Though, this is interesting. From the patent:

"This document describes an adaptable or universal game controller which can be used to emulate the controllers of popular game consoles, such as, without limitation, the PlayStation.TM. made by Sony, a controller made by Nintendo, X-box.TM. game controllers made by Microsoft, Amiga CD-32.TM. controllers, Atari Jaguar.TM. controllers, Gravis Gamepad.TM. controllers, Sega controllers, and Turbographics controllers, one or more of which terms may be subject to trademark protection."

PS3 Hypervisor and Bootloader Memory Dump Publically Leaked

Just a few days after kakarotoks released a kernel module to dump out the PS3 Hypervisor and Bootloader someone named Ps3 Memory Dump from GeoHot's blog did just that, and has leaked it publically as pictured below.

The included ReadMe file acknowledges is0mick's recent Atmega8 port, however, it curiously attempts to flame other PS3 News Devs despite using their code to make the HV dump... go figure, eh?

Preliminary examination of the leaked dump is currently underway by both Devs and end-users alike, with a few noteworthy findings thus far as follows:

    From sapperlott:

    • repos @ 0x2c00 - 0x43ff
    • partition table @ 0x6000
    • SELFs @ 0x20000, 0x37000, 0x55000, 0x1624bc, 0x6c25b4, 0x6d5470
    • FSELFs (?) @ 0xa19a0, 0x12dea0, 0x369720
    • other SCE files @ 0x35e100, 0x6c5ed4
    • LPAR data @ 0x12a0a0

    From Karl69:

    • IDA entry point looks like 0x10190 is interesting address.

    From ifcaro:

    • Code starts at 0x00203000 according to my analysis.

    From Kimd41:

I found some functions which aren't documented:

    • lv1_rsx_enable
    • lv1_iosys_enable

And below are some screen highlights from chipsy and yellowsnow. Thanks in advance to ALL who continue to publically share their findings with the PS3 scene!

    Random question regarding xbox:

I'm getting a new tv on Saturday (http://reviews.cnet.com/flat-panel-t...-33485570.html that one, if you're interested), and I'm debating whether or not to upgrade to an Elite. Right now I have a pre-HDMI 360, so the best I can do is component, and my hard drive is only 20 GB, so I can't really install that many games on it. Has microsoft said anything about the timeframe for their next-gen system?

The difference between HDMI and Component is pretty minimal, and you probably won't notice a difference. Hard drive you could just buy a used 60 or 120gb one.

I wouldn't expect to see the next Xbox or the PS4 for at least another 2-3 years. No announcements have been made, but they'll probably announce it within a year or two.

xbox 720 will be out before the ps4. Xbox has more to gain from their next gen system(right now anways) with HDDVD losing to blue ray.

X-box already said something along the lines of a streaming system no? very minor hint but I know I saw a rumor or something about that.

The only thing I'm worried about with just buying a hard drive is how old my system is. The one I have currently is a refurbished model when my first box died, and it's going on over 3 years old now. I believe its before the models that improved the air flow/lessened the heat build up, so it could possibly go at any time and no warranty is left. I understand the Elites can go as well, but that would at least have a warranty with it. My current system could also not ever go, which means my worry about it is pointless.

the newer X-box 360's have a longer life span then the 1st few ones. a New system(if you get the right one) should be fine for a good long time. Anyone know the numbers on the rate of RROD on jaspers?

Like I said, it's an older system. I'm almost positive it is a model before they fixed some of the issues with overheating.

They still RROD (thankfully a lot less than earlier models), but still probably too early to tell a specific rate. Same with the slim, too early to tell if some of the overheating problems that happened in the phats, more specifically the launch models, have been fixed, but I would guess so.

well there is a rumor going around that xbox is going to start selling their next 360. *proof* is that a lot of gamestops and stuff are giving you 25-50 back on some xbox's. then there is that slim shot the xbox 720 might come out in 2011(lol right)

fact is you cant go wrong with a new system if you have the money to blow. outside that if cash is tight maybe just invest in a new Hard drive.

They are doing this because Microsoft is making way for the console relaunch which will come bundled with Natal, at least from what I have read.

They're actually banking pretty big on Natal grabbing the casual audience, and if it goes well, I don't think you will see the next Xbox until around 2012 at the earliest.
