Activision Kills True Crime and Guitar Hero, Announces “Beachhead”

Activision dropped some serious bombs today during its 2010 fourth quarter earnings call. First off, the unannounced Guitar Hero title set to be released in 2011 has been canned and the franchise’s business unit is to be completely disbanded “due to continued declines in the music genre.” Same goes for Tony Hawk as there will be ”no new skateboarding games in 2011.”

The bloodshed didn’t end there. It was also revealed that the upcoming open-world reboot of the True Crime series in development at the Vancouver-based United Front Games will never see the light of day. The reasoning behind this cancelation is that it “just wasn’t going to be good enough.” Additionally, rumors have been circulating the Twitter-sphere that Activision-owned developers Vicarious Visions and Freestyle Games (DJ Hero) will go through major layoffs and restructuring but this has yet to be confirmed.

But from the ashes of its medicore-selling franchises comes a Call of Duty Phoenix. Activision CEO Bobby Kotick also announced plans to a launch a new studio focused on “the development of an innovative new digital platform and special services for our Call of Duty community.” The new studio will be going by the name “Beachhead” and while the details were kind of vague, I would guess we won’t being seeing full-fledged games from this studio but instead Call of Duty-related services. Think something like Steam or Battle.Net but strictly for Call of Duty. If there’s one franchise that warrants this kind of treatment, it’s Call of Duty.

They better not kill off Freeystyle Games in the restructuring. DJ Hero is the only thing I've enjoyed that's come from Activision in years.

Random question related to the 360: I'd like to use a keyboard to type messages out and such, but when I plug a spare I have into the USB port, any time I shut off the console my power supply will red light and refuse to boot until I take out the keyboard and reconnect the cords. Now, my intuition suggests that that the supply technically doesn't have the power to cold boot the system and keyboard at once, but it's kind of annoying playing the reconnect game. Do I have to use some kind of official M$ keyboard, or is there something I'm overlooking somewhere?

Probably when Activision realizes they can charge players $10/month for having a spectator-bot go into the match and stream the contents to the web.

Don't think any dev would allow such a thing to be used live for a ranked match though. I know some games support replay data for multiplayer, but not any means of taking it from there and exporting it to a video file on a usb stick.

A possibility. I wouldn't call this spare keyboard high-end, but it has a few needless media buttons and such that I'd never use. Partly why I suspect the power consumption might be an issue, since it could suck up more than a basic one would.

"Two new job listings posted on SCEA's Web site reveal the company is getting serious about PlayStation 3 software piracy.

Sony is looking for a new Senior Corporate Counsel and a Senior Paralegal for Anti-Piracy and Brand Protection. The main responsibilities include "assessing annual SCEA corporate anti-piracy needs and addressing the needs through developing and implementing an anti-piracy program."

Sony recently took famed iPhone hacker George Hotz to court after he and another group of hackers unlocked the PlayStation 3's security and later published the data online.

Since then, homebrew applications to run pirated software have hit the net, and one of Sony's major first-party titles, Killzone 3, was reportedly leaked two weeks before its release."

UPDATE: Exchanged the buzzer for a new PS3 and so far no issues. The other one made the noise almost immediately, and the new one is still normal after having it on for maybe 5 hours (3 of which was me playing Black Ops). Hopefully all goes well.

UPDATE: Shit started making a brand new annoying noise after I used it for a couple weeks. This one sounds like the standard noise the fan makes, only really high-pitched. Back I go to exchange it once again, although at least now I can get the new Killzone 3 bundle and get a free game out of it.

Since HD and non HD usually on a PC file change I wanna ask this idiot question

I have a PS3 at my house plugged on HDMI.

My Girlfriend brother just bought himself a PS3 but he doesn't have and HDTV (LOL)

So If I bring my FFXIII save to his house will it create a problem since my settings are saved HD or can I fix that, or will it just be fine
