New Nintendo Console Debuting At E3 This June, Launching In 2012, More Powerful Than Xbox 360 and PS3
Nintendo's next console will debut at E3 in June, moving the maker of Mario and Zelda into the HD era. The news, first reported by Game Informer today, confirms rumors that have been swirling for months in the wake of slowing game releases from Nintendo.
Furthermore, we've heard that the machine will be more powerful than current-gen systems, meaning Nintendo, currently backing a Wii that is weaker in horsepower than the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, will be showing a new console that is more powerful than those current competitors.
We've asked Nintendo for comment and will let you know if they shock us and spill the beans. Update: Nintendo responded to our inquiry with a standard "Nintendo does not comment on rumor or speculation".
E3 kicks off on June 7, though Nintendo's E3 press conference may occur the day before, if tradition holds.
Probably only slightly more powerful than PS3/360. Honestly not hyped at all after the Wii, Nintendo did well financially by catering to the casual market and going for affordability over performance, I'll wait for the next Sony/MS console which will probably come out soon after this and will blow it away in terms of power. I wonder if it will be able to finally play DVDs lol
I would hope it'd be more powerful given how weak the PS3/360 hardware was even by PC standards back at its release.
(aside from the PS3's cell processor being something different that took devs forever to figure out how to milk)
The only thing I want to know though, if this is true, is what audience would Nintendo be aiming for exactly? With their recent focus on the 3DS, one would assume they might be after 3-D gaming on the big screen without compromise or framerate issues by toting more powerful hardware than the competition, but with the low adoption rate of 3DTVs and the whole 'glasses free' business they've been pushing on the 3DS, they can't possibly be targeting that, especially with the kind of people that purchased the Wii.
Most I can see is the new console being what the current Wii should have been from the start: capable of at least 720p, dvd playback, and gyro/other refinements in their motion controller so it won't just be waggle nonsense.
Probably too late for them to get their own gamer demographic back also no?
What I'd want to see is a solid HD system that can render Gamecube/Wii games at HD resolution. Even then though, their controllers have been wonky since the SNES. I hate the Wii's controllers. Hate 'em. Motion control ruins what'd otherwise be perfectly good games, but would have to be included even for backwards compatibility. Maybe a "waggle" button >_>
Still, Nintendo hasn't put out a system to sell solely based on its ability to run software since the Gamecube - always some gimmick to try and force games to use.
My guess is some form of 3D, and probably a bigger focus on online. They probably want a larger piece of the direct-download market. A high-res, on-your-TV version of Apple's App store or the like wouldn't surprise me. Appeals to the casual market, rakes in the cash, so it'd fit their business model of late. Toss in some of their old properties, and you secure the nostalgia crowd, so 90% of their playerbase is secured.
The problem I have with a next-gen nintendo system is that they will have to really work on their first party line-up to make it comparable to Xbox and PS3 1st party/exclusives. So if you talk about stuff like online gameplay or download content, typical Nintendo brand games wouldn't have that unless they are overhauled. Mario 2012 or Kirby 2012 won't be much different than what is out now unless Nintendo steps up their content for this "system more powerful than the current gen." Now that isn't to say the stuff won't sell, because if there is anything Nintendo can do, it is sell a product. I'd just hate it to be like the Wii where the game that was released, despite it being a new console, could have been released on the LAST console(gamecube). Here's hoping Nintendo has some new IP to put behind a new console.
