Why the PS3 can't do cross-game chat

Cross-game voice chat is not possible on the PlayStation 3 because of memory restrictions, Sony has revealed.

The PS3's RAM is gobbled up by the games it runs, which prevents the much-desired feature from being implemented, Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida told Eurogamer.

"Once a game gets RAM we never give it back," he said. "It's not possible to retrofit something like that after the fact."

As revealed by Eurogamer yesterday, PS Vita, due out in Europe early next year, actually has more RAM than the PS3.

Vita has 512MB of RAM and 128MB of V-RAM, compared to the PS3's 256MB of system RAM and 256MB of video RAM. This enables features such as cross-game voice chat to run in the background while games are being played.

On the PS3, however, things are different.

"The game has to use its own memory to do [in-game voice chat]. There's always voice chat in the game. But it's a part of a game feature. It's not a part of an OS feature. That's the reason in terms of the ability to have voice chat across different games."

So, voice chat is better on Vita than PS3?

"We totally agree!" Yoshida replied.

cant just make it not work on past games, but give slightly less ram to developers in the interest of the community going forward? honestly don't know how half the games are even using the ram anyways

I blame multi-platform games where devs reserve too much on the RAM side for the 360 release. It's probably why PS3 is the lead console nowadays since it's lowest-common-denominator in one of the more crucial aspects.


Sony did free up RAM in the past via firmware updates, but they gave it all to the devs to use. You know, if they redid the ingame XMB so it isn't a waste of space/time perhaps they could squeeze in something even if it's just 1-on-1 chat.

You don't realize how much you use it until you're on brobox using it. You use it quite a lot, even if you don't notice it; the party system on xbox is one of the best things about live, and I really wish the ps3 had it =(.

not being able to chat while setting up any kind of game is horrible, my friends and i all use our 360s to chat even when playing on ps3 just cause it fails so bad

I thought it was more that the original specs were 256 for both RAM and VRAM, like the PS3, then changed to 128 VRAM. The distribution makes more sense accounting for background apps/processes though.

Hadn't played my 360 for about 2 months, so I turned it on the other day to find out I couldn't sign into my account because the information wasn't valid.

So I recovered my gamertag and it was a completely different gamertag and everything was in Chinese lol

Thankfully I didn't have a CC linked to my account...

I guess I will be getting MW3/BF3 for the ps3. Fuck you Microsoft. 5 360's (rrod/disc read failures) and one hacked account.

Pretty sure it was Kotaku being sensationalist over a small issue affecting some people. I was on the PSN when they claimed the "entire network" was down and never got booted off. Was probably just some sort of log-in error that Sony took a couple hours to resolve.

Didn't Nintendo say themselves that 3DS is more a device that people had to use to understand rather than by going with word of mouth/ads as far as the 3-D workings went?

I took from the article that people did use it, understand it, and just didn't really care for it. I would be one of them simply cause my eyes tire so easily and the viewing angle while using 3d is so small.
