Atelier Ayesha English Version Confirmed For The West
NIS America confirmed they will localize Atelier Ayesha during their Anime Expo panel. During a Q&A session, producer Jack Niida asked fans to wait three or four months for more information about the English version of Atelier Ayesha.

Atelier Ayesha just came out in Japan this past Thursday. NIS America released Atelier Meruru: The Apprentice of Arland on May 29, a little less than a year after the PlayStation 3 game came out in Japan.

    Press release;

Sony Computer Entertainment today announced that it entered into a definitive agreement on June 30, 2012 to acquire Gaikai Inc., the world's leading interactive cloud-based gaming company, for approximately USD 380 million. Through the acquisition, SCE will establish a new cloud service, ensuring that it continues to provide users with truly innovative and immersive interactive entertainment experiences.

"By combining Gaikai's resources including its technological strength and engineering talent with SCE's extensive game platform knowledge and experience, SCE will provide users with unparalleled cloud entertainment experiences," said Andrew House, President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. "SCE will deliver a world-class cloud-streaming service that allows users to instantly enjoy a broad array of content ranging from immersive core games with rich graphics to casual content anytime, anywhere on a variety of internet-connected devices."

"SCE has built an incredible brand with PlayStation and has earned the respect of countless millions of gamers worldwide," said David Perry, CEO of Gaikai Inc. "We're honored to be able to help SCE rapidly harness the power of the interactive cloud and to continue to grow their ecosystem, to empower developers with new capabilities, to dramatically improve the reach of exciting content and to bring breathtaking new experiences to users worldwide."

Established in 2008 and headquartered in Aliso Viejo, California, Gaikai has developed the highest quality, fastest interactive cloud-streaming platform in the world that enables the streaming of quality games to a wide variety of devices via the internet. With this acquisition, SCE will establish a cloud service and expand its network business by taking full advantage of Gaikai's revolutionary technology and infrastructure including data centers servicing dozens of countries and key partners around the world.

The transaction is subject to certain regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions.

SCE will continue to aggressively expand a new world of entertainment through the introduction of innovative technologies and the delivery of amazing experiences.
This was rumored a couple of weeks before E3, but nothing had been finalized. I wonder if this means PS3 will get Hawken?

Correct me if I am just being a dumbass, but didn't Gaikai partner with Samsung or something just before E3? There was talk about them doing cloud gaming on the TVs possibly. Unless I am totally remembering that wrong, I wonder what this now means for them. Surely Sony wouldn't want to support non Sony HDTV lines... right? Thinking about this too hard?

EDIT: Here is a bit of an article that expresses my thoughts a bit better...

Today’s deal closed on June 30, Sony says. Gaikai had raised $45 million in venture funding since 2010, with investors including Benchmark Capital, NEA and Intel Capital.

In Sony’s last quarter, it noted that amid record losses for the company, it saw declines in sales of its PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2 and PSP devices. That is down to a number of factors: pressure from competitors like Microsoft and Nintendo, yes, but also the rise of mobile gaming and other services that do not require consoles for consumers to get their shooting/jumping/virtual world building fixes.

If Gaikai’s existing deals remain in place, the move will also see Sony develop another line of business, as a service provider to a number of competing consumer electronics companies: these include LG and Samsung, both of which signed deals with Gaikai to deliver games to their connected TVs this year. You can see a full list of its partnerships since 2010 here.

The rumor also raises the prospect of what might happen next with OnLive, another games streaming company. In June, a leaked Microsoft strategy memo, originally posted on Scribd but now taken down by lawyers, noted streaming companies like OnLive as a threat to the gaming console business, and mentioned the company by name as an acquisition target.

Sony and Samsung have jointly owned factories that produce a lot of the parts for both Samsung and Sony TVs. Sony getting a cut from someone playing a game on a Samsung TV that Sony also got a cut of during production probably works out pretty well for them.

EA: ‘We’re Going To Be 100% Digital’
The publisher behind games like Mass Effect and Madden says it won't be selling its games at brick-and-mortar stores for much longer.

Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, EA Labels president Frank Gibeau said it won't be too much longer before the company goes completely digital:

It's in the near future. It's coming. We have a clear line of sight on it and we're excited about it. Retail is a great channel for us. We have great relationships with our partners there. At the same time, the ultimate relationship is the connection that we have with the gamer. If the gamer wants to get the game through a digital download and that's the best way for them to get it, that's what we're going to do. It has a lot of enhancements for our business. It allows us to keep more that we make. It allows us to do some really interesting things from a service level standpoint; we can be a lot more personalized with what we're doing...

For us, the fastest growing segment of our business is clearly digital and clearly digital services and ultimately Electronic Arts, at some point in the future... we're going to be a 100% digital company, period. It's going to be there some day. It's inevitable.

Oh god, that means no more Madden days at game retailers.

    The beginning of the end.

2 major problems with 100% digital distribution:

    1. Price point: If games are still going to cost $60 and we don't get to own a physical copy? Fuck you. If it costs you less to distribute the game, you forward at least some of those savings to the consumer. We're in a recession, pulling that kind of shit is not acceptable.

    2. Property rights: This is something that is extremely touchy and is already becoming an issue. Servers for games are not going to stay up forever. We've already seen it with games like Phantasy Star Online, the multiplayer servers for Halo and a multitude of other games, even games that aren't that old like Demon's Souls almost had their servers taken down and that cuts the game in half. Chrome Hounds is a really good example of this. Xbox Live and PSN are not going to be around forever, so all that DLC and shit, most arcade games that need to be validated by whatever service they connect to will be unplayable at some point down the road. The Internet is not permanent in that sense. To the people that say that isn't going to happen, just look at what happened with the Halo 1 & 2 multiplayer servers. People stayed online for days to postpone the shutdown of those servers but in the end Microsoft was just like "It's cute that you're dedicated, but sorry fuck you." This kind of shit isn't like MMOs where they can have consistent income as incentive to keep these servers online. Even then certain MMOs were shutdown with enough of playerbase to keep the game alive (SWG). DLC and arcade games aren't sustainable income for incentive to keep those kinds of servers online.

All of that isn't even taking into account the increasingly bullshit DRM we are experiencing that also factors into just how much we actually own the fucking game we paid $60 for or the fact that we're getting less and less product for our money, or less quality products.

The fact of the matter is, we are on the verge of not actually owning the games we pay for and going 100% digital is another step in relinquishing our rights to own games to fuckwits like EA.

TL;DR If I shell out money for a game, I expect to have access to that game as long as I have the hardware to run it and keep it in usable condition. I don't want my ability to play a game being determined by dumbass shareholders who have never played a game in their life.

I'm so glad that I've never purchased an EA game, and now I will never have to. Go fuck yourself EA, you were a shitty company before and now you're getting even worse.

For PC this seems fine as there is an ever decreasing selection of boxed games & already a fair number of those are linked with either Steam or Origin making the disc almost useless. As for consoles, I'd rather not spend a day downloading a game & my HDD's are already full enough as is. Console discs seem like an obvious thing to keep around, at least until next gen if they figure out some sort of compression method.

Wasn't this thread stickied or something? When did PC become a console? Why are people still afraid of digital distribution for games.

It stopped being a 'console war' and was mainly just random gaming info thrown into the thread. Honestly I should just change the title to General Gaming news.

yea its bad enough i have to delete games on my ps3 just to get the games im getting from PS+ but if they want to be 100% digital i dont think it would catch on as much as they want it too and they will lose profits like Kuishen pointed out.

after what EA has done, its not as bad as Activision going for profits and laying people off at the Prototype studio, after they have had what, 3 record breaking grossing games 3 years in a row.. and people blame Obama for us not having any jobs

There would have to be bigger HDDS on all next gen consoles if they do go digital.

Ehh, all i'm going to add is lol @ buying games for full price.

Bigger hard drives are a given for next gen or they will allow you to replace them with bigger ones, ps3 can already do that.

Digital is truly the only way to go for handhelds at least, fuck carrying a hundred disk or chips for your handheld everywhere you go then end up losing them because they are so small or getting them eaten by a dog. Or having your gaming fanny pack get stolen or something and losing all the disc or whatever they are now.
