MONTREAL - A Montreal woman who used fondue fuel to set her late boyfriend's penis on fire has been sentenced to four years in prison.

The Crown says taking into account time already served, Andree Rene will have to remain incarcerated for another 30 months.

Crown attorney Steeve Lariviere said today the 44-year-old woman also needs follow-up help for her psychological and alcohol problems. advertisement




In April 2001, Rene's boyfriend went to bed following a heated argument between them.

As Guillaume Pungo snoozed, Rene doused the man's private parts with fuel and set them aflame.

The 52-year-old spent a month in hospital after suffering third-degree burns in the pelvic area and on his chest.

Lariviere also says Pungo, who died last year of unrelated causes, had difficulty getting into relationships after what happened.

...Did you think at all? He probably woke up after the first drop hit him, but there's something called reaction time, and then he has to move and by then there'd already be plenty of the liquid on him to burn him that much.

It'd probably be warmed up to at least room/body temperature by the time she applied it, and there wouldn't really be a liquid shock.

sometimes burns are so serious you don't feel them because they burn the nerves. I learned this working in a kitchen when putting some chicken in the over the back of my hand touched the hot part of the oven but yet I didnt feel anything. The only reason I pulled it back was because I saw steam shoot up. I couldnt feel the back of my hand for 2 days but when I did it hurt like no tomorrow.

If I remember correctly, her name was Lorena Bobbitt, and I believe she successfully argued that she was temporarily insane and got 45 days in a psychiatric hospital. The guy was allegedly physically abusive, so that may have bought her some sympathy from a jury (Not that that's grounds for mutilating someone, but that's what I gathered). Apparently he didn't learn his lesson; he was arrested for domestic abuse in 2002 and again in 2004 and 2005.
