I want my airship back, fuck taking 20-30mins walking places, console RPGs aren't meant to be MMOs. Thank god for tele crystals cause if those weren't there... wow.

You kind of contradicted yourself by the third sentence. FF seemed to always be evolving in some way or form. Even the belowed turn-based system changed into a live action one that let opponents act while you picked your actions. It's only natural that another part of it changes.

Love or hate it, FF12 would have been a piece of trash without the gambit system IMO. The bazaar was interesting but give me back my damn gil drops . Having to decide between having 1(2) people set to auto steal every single fight just to keep yourself from being broke or farming endlessly for drops is annoying. I'm fine with farming for money to buy fancy weapons and all but the game was easier than FF10 to me. Getting several level ups more than needed because I'm trying to afford things in an already easy game is a major turn off.

Also, I like the random battles... Maybe it's just because I grew up on them or FFXI tired me out but I wasn't really a fan of the system FF12 used ._.

    I wasn't a huge fan of FFXII either, I liked 10 a lot more.

But you still have your airship... Every single FF in the main series gives you an airship at or before the endgame (assuming 2 and 3 are the same way, never played those much). Turning the worldmap into a list of destinations in 10 and 12 didn't really change anything if you ask me. Of course, in 10 you didn't have to run back and forth across the world before getting the airship quite as much as in 12. Gate crystals both help the tedium of that a little and compliment the much more limited airship destinations in 12.

i don't think FF13's battle system will be anything like FF12's

if you want a taste of it, try to look up gameplay preview of game called "white knight," that's what FF13's will be like

Yeah........I liked being able to go afk for literally 20 minutes in a room full of mobs and my characters still be fighting for me, at full health, or the boss be dead, because of gambits too. I also liked how every single one of my characters were exact replicas of the other in the very beginning of the game to the very end because of the shitty license grid FF12 had.

I hope the people doing the systems this time won't make those same mistakes again. Gambits were kind of cool, yes, but they made the game boring. And I know I didn't have to use them, but I did, and that was my impression of them.

FF10's grid was so much better.
The fuck are you talking about?

the only FF past 7 that had any kind of character uniqueness was 9, 7 everyone was a clone, 8 everyone was a clone, 10 everyone started OFF unique, but if you wanted to get anywhere in the game everyone was a clone.

Basically 10's grid system is a restricted license board.

Why are people so fucking afraid of change?! If you want random encounters every 2 steps and limited turn based battle systems (sure, call them "traditional", I'll call them lazy) then go play DQ or something. Change is what keeps a series going as long as it does, it seems only Zelda can get away with keeping everything pretty much exactly the same in every game (with a few minor differences), the FF series basically reinvented itself, it's become fresh and modern no longer a relic of the past.

Would you honestly be satisfied with the same shit for 12+ games? Only the story and characters changing? I sincerly hope a person like that never designs any games.

RPGs only used to be turn based because of limitations of the hardware, now theres so much power and potential WHY stick to the same crap? People complained about random battles so much in the past, the first thing I remember hearing about 12 was "why did the take out random battles?"

Seriously, go play 7, you'll see that an encounter every 2 steps followed by 2-5+ secs of waiting before the battle starts and 10+secs after it finishes how annoying it is.

As for gambits, they were done right, how else do you think they could've done it? FF12 was an experiment, a way they could change and push to new levels, I welcome this, 13 should be good and they battle system sounds interesting, something like interactive cinematics, very dynamic and flashy. although versus sounds less interesting.

You're all avoiding the real question:

Will you invest in a PS3 to satisfy your FF addiction?

    I'm on the fence..

    No.

I don't mind change, I actually enjoyed 12 quite a bit. The maps looking like a bunch of MMO maps connected together instead of a world map annoyed me a bit, but I don't let small things like that keep me from playing a good game.

The more they stray away from the aspects of FF that I like, the less I'll enjoy these games. There's no way in hell I'd buy a PS3 just for a game like that.

Suikoden 6, on the other hand... If only Konami would release some info =/

No. no, that is not the real question. There is a thread for a question like that. A stickied thread.

lol I didn't even notice that console war thread. But seriously, I wish the PS3 wasn't so expensive, FF13 sounds like it will be FF12 but better. I guess FFXI and FFXII were the beta, and FFXIII is just going to be all of the faults fixed.

I really hope the price for PS3 drops at least

it's not the sole reason I'mma get a PS3, but I'd be lying if I said it wasn't one of the reasons.

Mmm...I might like it. I thought FF12 was ok, but I do miss the older battle systems (why is fighting random mobs such a bad thing again? I never had a problem with that in an RPG...that's like complaining that you have to take time to aim a gun in a shooter imo). If they focus more on the grid system so that characters aren't so...not unique, I'll be happy. Seriously, I want to be able to take two seperate characters and actually consider them different enough to matter. This battle system sounds kind of like something from the Tales or Grandia series (which I liked a lot more than 12's system), but we shall see.

Wow I thought I was one of the only ones who was generally disappointed by FFXII.

The general gameplay was enjoyable but I do agree with the general tone of the thread that isn't was not anything remotely special, it was the story line that really pissed me off.

Just seemed like the characters were as thin as a piece of paper and the usual 'epic struggle' and 'hero' characters that I love so much weren't there. To be honest the characters made me hate playing through the game and by the end every time a CS triggered I cringed.

Heavy emphasis on real vocal dialogue being the only medium (with text to narrate with it in some cases) drastically reduces the potential depth of a game. In older games when you could have a 15-20 minute character developing text discussion that you could take at your own pace (however fast you read) was great and really helped me get into the game, but having voice actors that don't fit the characters / have annoying voices talk at you for 15-20 minutes for a casual conversation just is not going to happen.

VA is 50/50 if it's good it helps a ton, if it sucks it hurts the game a ton, I actually think it's a good idea to take that risk for RPGs, but when people clamor for VA in Zelda I cringe to think what might go wrong

I wouldn't say that I'm psychic, but I'm getting a very strong sense of imminent anal rape radiating from you.
