It seemed like the whole 4th disc was just tacked on and the story jumped from "huh" to "wat?"
FF8's story, lame? it's probably the deepest and most complex out of the PS series where you can speculate more than any of the other FFs

also the "kompression" villain i think is supposed to make her sound russian or something
Speculate? You can only speculate because they gave you nothing in the first place...If you think a story about an emo-kid trying to save the world with companions he grew up with and forgot but by some sick twist ALL ended up together again to fight a villian who wanted to kompress time for NO reason deep. Then yeah, it's deep.

It's not deep and complex at all, it started off interesting enough, had a good direction for around a disc and a half, then after that it all went to shit.

And yeah, I thought the last boss in 9 was totally random, they should've at least mentioned him, or Kuja should've said SOMETHING about it...but it was still a cool fight, that Grand Cross move looked so good.

This was my problem with 8 as well. The beginning pretty much owned, I only ever play this game for the 1st Disc anymore.

Not to mention the fact that Necron steals lines from Star Wars...

Necron as a final boss was pretty strange. It would have made more sense if he was just a raged-out Kuja instead of some random funky angel of death conducting an "experiment".

I'd take Final Fantasy Tactics for the best storyline ever, excellent game once you get into it, but I always find it difficult to really go into character building in it because the combat system eventually just drags & by the time you are far enough along to get the best equipment, do advanced dungeons, etc, you are typically just burned out on the grid battle system.

If you could take the storyline from FFT & merge it with one of the better battle systems I think you would have a real winner.

On a side note I can't stand the battle system in FF12. After a while it just feels like you turn the game onto auto-pilot and could just walk off and make yourself dinner or run some errands & come back to see how far the game has gotten in the meantime. I'd prefer to have a lot more active control over characters, and yes while I realize you can take active control of them all the time if you want it ends up not being very efficient because of the quick speed combats will end up going at, and just sucks up time instead.

Was a neat move in FF5, too, along with Almagest.

FFX was plain stupid, FF12 was boring until Pharos, and FF7's story still holds the #2 slot for me since I think FF9 was better than it, even though 7 was revolutionary for its time.

FF9>7>8>12>10 For me (as far as the 3D FFs are concerned.)
I liked 9, except the final boss thing i didnt like. This book just appears and is like HAY GUYZ, I HAD NO PART IN THE STORYLINE BUT HERE I AMZZZ!

I'd probably rank 7>9>8>12>10, I'm kinda surpised most people hate 9, i really enjoyed the music + the chocobo hot and cold
Yeah I agree, the final boss was the most random thing ever.

9 had the best mini games. Chocobo Hot and Cold was so addictive, same with the card game.

Cards in 8 was pretty cool too. Hated the random selection rule though, kept losing my character cards and having to restart. It was even hard for me to turn my Laguna card into Heroes for Omega fight.

Cards and Chocobo games aside, the story in 7 was probably my favourite.

Just for reference, here's a list of FFs who have final bosses you knew about more than an hour before you get to fight them (at least up through 10):

FF1: Chaos; though not known as this form, and only encountered twice, you've at least known about him for the entire game.
FF2: Emperor Burmecia/Barmekia/Paramecia/whatever; he's a recurring villain and the major antagonist.
FF5: Exdeath; despite being a tree, he's well-developed and has been the major antagonist for the entire game.
FF6: Kefka; he is the major antagonist for a significant portion of the game, and well-developed. You have a reason for wanting him dead.
FF7: Sephiroth; also the major antagonist for the major portion of the game.
FF10: Depending on how you look at it, and who you consider the final boss to be, it could go either way. In any case, you know and have heard about everything you fight at that stage.

Ultimecia? >.> You know about her involvement for at least 2 CDs.

And Kuja is technically FF9's final boss, the stupid add-on random boss they put at the end wasn't even that hard.

Then I guess you could throw FF4 in there, too, since you techincally are aware of Zemus since the Tower of Zot when you get Kain back.

But in neither case is anything really explained or the final villain developed at all until the final sequence.

Well you know that Edea has been posessed after you beat her on CD2, and in CD3 they explain it's a sorceress from the future, then you know she takes over Rinoa, and then Adel.

So yeah, you could count her heh.

And you could kind of count Zemus too.

And Kuja is available since CD1 and is pretty active, and after he kills the "elephant lady" () on CD2 you kind of know he's the main villian.

Main villain, but not final boss. And you can't really pull the FF10 card since, unlike FF10, the final final boss of FF9 actually can be a challenge and you can lose. The final final fights of 10 and 7 are just for story's sake, and you can't even lose those. So in those cases, you could say the final fights aren't the real final bosses. But in FF9, Necron pretty much is the real final boss, not Kuja.

People have lost to Necron? lol... all you gotta do is put all the status ailment protections up and you're set.

But yeah I guess you're right.

I just finally finished up with the Cloister at the very, very, very end of things with the bonus dungeon.

And voted for V. I had lots of fun with it, though the previous ones were great.

EDIT: Misread your post! Kuja was a badass final boss though - he'd make my top 3 of FF bosses.

IX only has three real flaws in my opinion:
    1. The game is more cartoony than 7 and 8 - I like it, many don't.
    2. The card game was frustrating and took many hours to complete a full deck - I never tried.
    3. The final FINAL boss is in fact, a complete sham. He was kinda tough though, so that was nice.

IX has a lot of things going for it:
    1. Huge world
    2. GREAT characters - would anyone argue that IX had the best character development?
    3. Garnet is hot, lol.
    4. Side stories that the game shows you are great.
    5. I miss the f'ing exclamation point to show you when you could grab something.
    6. The job system was nice and a nice change of pace from VIII.

I could probably list more but I won't

IX is a solid, solid game. Over looked by many because the PS2 came out right before it (or was it right after it? Can't remember).

I wouldn't say it was cartoony, sure it was stylized, but I think the style was meant tor represent the way old FF characters were portrayed, something about the style is like a 3D reminiscense of the 8/16 bit FF games. I loved the style, and stupidly - I know, it's the number 1 reason people don't like 9.

Pretty stupid to write of a game because the character designs have a little flair in them, sorry, no emo kids with huge spiky hair and zips from head to toe!

Besides, if you didn't like the way 9 looked, how did you play 7 which (in field) had an even MORE warped look?

QFT I think. The style of the characters perfectly matched with the theme of the game.

I'm really surprised to see how poorly XII is polling. FFXII was the first FF game for me (and I've only played the PS and up ones so I know I'm missing out on a lot) where I actually liked the characters, had a fun and expansive story, and a combat system that actually innovated instead of sitting squarely in the 1980s. I'm really looking forward to the Tactics release for PSP soon; I need something for the commute to work.
