I gotta put Chrono Trigger above all FF"s because it was my first real rpg :D and ever since I can't replay it enough.

    But out of the ff's....

    VII > V > VI > IX > X > VIII

VII scores higher for me because I felt more drawn into the story than I did with V and VI, and it was also one of the first rpgs I ever played through. Another reason it's up there is because it's the only non sprite FF I can even stand to replay. Sprite RPGS are <3 tho, kinda like reading a good book, especially when you can fast forward on an emulator.

I'm really looking forward to the Tactics release for PSP soon; I need something for the commute to work.
Well, I haven't had the time or money to buy XII yet, but even when I do have a chance to play it I think it will be difficult to sway my vote. I don't really care much about graphics, and the story and character development for the older games were pretty good, and :-X I'm getting old and turning nostalgic.

XII is still very fresh, so a lot of people here are at the stage where they are hating themselves for liking it... it's falling into that time period where it's getting to be cool to bash it. Also, being the latest in the series, it is automatically to blame for all that is wrong with the series. It can never be as good as any of the games to come before it. Not until 13 comes out, at least.

As much as I liked 7(which was my first Final Fantasy) and 10, I'd have to say Tactics was, and still is, my favorite by far. The story was great until they started introducing the whole Zodiac monster thing, then it was just kind of a downward spiral past that(it felt a little, idk...overdone), but the battle system was probably single handedly responsible for getting me into the whole strategy/RPG kind of games

    VI was awesome.

VII still wins because of the story. I still like the materia system as one of the best systems of the series. Yea, there are many fanboys. But it still remains as Sakaguchis masterpiece. Too bad they fucked it all up with all of their recent FF7 revival crap. Good thing I haven't touched anything of that crap and will never do.

VIII is alot better than many people say. The presentation of this game is just fantatistic and the Overture at start is it worth alone to play.

IX had a nice and cute setting, but the story wasn't that awesome and the gameplay was meh.

X could have been THE highlight of the series after VII, but the story is too short and lacks the all of this hidden aspects you only realize when using your brain. I really liked the new battle system. The english translation was total junk and far too fucking different from the JP original. I was playing the german version and the subtitles were often totally different from what the people were saying. That was because the german subs where translated directly from JP.

X-2 is bleh. A useless game which only good aspect was the pretty dynamic battle system. The interesting parts of the story should've been in X.

Playing XII atm and I like it so far.

IX for me. A FF game should really be heroic fantasy, not a mix of funky sword-guns weapons. And very well balances between mini games, side quests, etc... Only problem was the ATB jauge system, or whatever the name ; basically strange that you make the game easier by slowing down the speed of the fight.

As for FF Tactics, story-like one of the best. But god dammit, the fate of all character is pretty much the same : either they died, either they ended up in your team. And you could be sure if there ever was a land shape handicap, such as a cliff, your team would be the handicaped one, and the opponent basically would have 10 archers slaughtering you from above.

because the warped look in 7 was still much more realistic than any RPG that occured before it. than it gets better with 8 and 9 gives you a feeling that it takes a step back (even though you know it was an artistic choice).

it's really the same reason why i never play WoW.

one reason why XII will poll poorly here is because most other people have played the other games first. i've always found nostalgia to be very powerful when people rate things.

FF Tactics will always be inferior to Matsuno's original Tactics game (Tactics Ogre), but even less people have played that.

FFXI was my answer, and while the story itself is not as good as some of the other FFs, I have been playing for over 3 years now, and no other FF can hold that level of interest. Meeting and playing with friends is a big deal and sets it apart from the rest.

I can, however, see how you could remove it from consideration because human interaction is 'cheating' lol and shouldn't really be part of a direct comparison, but since the option is there, thats where my vote goes.

To chime in on the FF8 debate... I do agree the story fell apart near the end, and that drawing was super annoying. More annoying than drawing was the inability to drop magic, the first time playing i spent so much time drawing for all my characters (pretty OCD haha) but I didn't know there was a maximum number of slots and when I did realize it, I had to get rid of some of the crappier magics to make room for the good stuff (casting magic 99 times . . . )

FF8 was the first time I really cared about the relationship between Rinoa and Squall, maybe it was the time in my life (teenager), or that in the past FFs, romantic relationships were tangental and only implied at best (i.e. censoring out Cecil sleeping with Rosa). Rinoa at the ball with Seifer and then dancing/meeting Squall remains my all time favorite FMV because the awkwardness is charming and I think most can relate with going to a party and really connecting with someone and then finding out they are with someone else. Maybe there is some wish-fulfillment going on, but in anyones life, at any time in their life, those connections are magical moments.

Ah, now here is an interesting debate.

I personally prefer FFT's smaller, 5-man battle groups over the 10-man ones of Tactics Ogre (I think it's 10). The battles in TO can really just be too big, and tend to drag on, though it could be a good thing depending on how you look at it.

I also think that FFT scales better as you go along, since TO has you literally grinding XP just so you don't get wtfpwnt at the next battle. Additionally, I find TO to be at a HUEG disadvantage for having non-rotatable maps, though it does get points for having much bigger maps. I can't comment on the story, because I only ever played about 1/4 of the way into TO, but it did seem interesting.

Actually, it was possible to drop magic, Square button I'm pretty sure...

Since I already voted/commented, that's it for me

I enjoy FFXI the best. In terms of storyline, it kind of has an "unfair" advantage vs FFVI(and ect). FFVI had tons of characters in your party, but most of the time, they mattered very little and that takes away from it in my opinion. In FFXI, your party(your friends) don't even exist outside the battle, so that factor is thrown out.

i was only talking about the story, the different battle systems is much more of a preference.

though i'd say it's not necessary to grind in TO if you know what you're doing (hard to do on the first play through), and overall TO is just much harder (and more challenging) than FFT.

9, I've listed why so many other times that I just don't feel like doing it again. But it's not only my favorite FF game, but my favorite game in general. Love it. Love it. Love it.

I really loved FFIX. I thought the backgrounds/scenery were really pretty. Also, the storyline was cute cause it was the first FF I ever played ('-'*). Best ever.
