Fetch - Decode - Execute explanation

Okay, so I suck. We're currently studying Fetch - Decode - Execute at college, and I guess I just wasn't paying attention, or I didn't absorb all of it - but basically, I was hoping somebody could explain the cycle at just the bare roots level.

Nothing too detailed, just a basic explanation of which components perform what, and in which order. I think I know the basics, but I'd like to make sure I know it before I submit it for an assignment.

For example, going through the steps for a very simple arithmetic instruction. Like 5+5, and what process the CPU goes through to perform this.

The wiki link is cool and all.. but it doesn't really describe why a processor would encounter a series of bytes like 0x83 0xC4 0x10 and what it does with it.

I just refuse to help people do their homework

Meh, I thought I'd checked Wikipedia with no luck. Considering the fact that most wikipedia entries are very detailed, I recalled it being too complicated to comprehend.

Anyways, thanks for the help. If anybody else would like to contribute, feel free. Any help is appreciated.

if this is a college course, check the little sheet the professor gave you the first day of class. it should have at the top office hours and/or contact info. might be easier to setup a chance to pop your head in and ask in person.

not saying this to be an asshole, you just said you had trouble comprehending it and seeing how its his sole job is to make sure you understand... he may have a better way than you asking someone here and that person ends up being full of crap.
