Take it from someone who lives in a predominantly Black community - your friend is lying to you. "Nigger" is a powerful word with not only hundreds of years of historical weight behind it, but it also sums up all the anger and frustration that individual Black Americans have felt every time someone treated them differently because of their race. It may have a different level of power over different individuals, but you're immensely naive to think that it can ever be completely removed of its meaning in the vast majority of contexts.

the only reason they're offensive is because people take them offensively. who knows, in 20 years emo may be one of those unspeakable words, or maybe even something as simple as nerd. in the 1800s~ the word nigger was not at all offensive, it was a definition and commonspeak. you think mark twain could get away with huck finn in 2007?

I think you're misinterpreting Huck Finn.

That book is one of the most vicious satires of antebellum-era society's devaluation of Blacks. The word was commonplace only because the era was immensely racist - racism was commonplace! His use of "Nigger" places a brand on Jim, devalues him as an individual and reduces him to a lower class of human being... the better to underscore a satirical narrative where Jim is really the only individual with moral worth that Huck meets in his travels.

The word is almost always hateful and insulting. It brands you as part of a subdivision of society, one placed on a lower rung than Whites. The word refers to a hateful perception of Blacks as stupid, shiftless, immoral, good-for-nothing criminals who aren't fully human. You can't simply "not be offended" by the word - it's only function is to offend. You can try to rise above someone's hate for you, as expressed by the word, but that's entirely different.

I do not know why anyone gives that woman credibility. She mistakes name calling for debate.

Wah the bleeding heart liberals need to lighten the fuck up. Do I think she was right in saying it? No, but people need to stop jumping to all of these PC bullshit functions and just let words be words.

There's a huge difference between being politically correct and publicly slurring someone. Huge difference.

What does "Political Correctness" have to do with anything? If you admit she was wrong to publicly slur Edwards, then what remains to be said? You think words like "faggot" should be tolerated in public, let alone in our political discourse?

Coulter is scum. She makes a living by catering to the lowest common denominator in political thought - people who see politics as an ugly slugfest between indivisible camps and who take a sadistic pleasure in spitting on their perceived "enemies" in an absurd "culture war". She has nothing constructive to say about the future of this country, and she has nothing of value to add to political discourse. She's destructive, vile and hate-filled; an abominable human being.

Sorry to disappoint, but I'm just a bored law school student with too much time on my hands 8)

I can tell you that "The Birth of Tragedy" is one of Nietzsche's worst works, and that IMO it mostly adds up to a BJ for Schopenhaeur and Wagner. Then again, I don't really have the patience for philosophy (or philology), so take that opinion with a grain of salt. I feel sorry for you for having to read it, your professor must be quite the sadist
