    Parrying skillups (NIN solo)

Anyone know a breakdown of decent solo areas to skillup NIN parrying? I'm at 237 and i've been told Steelshells would get me to about 245 but they just dont give me skillups...is there anything higher but not like super difficult to skillup on?

Also whats the best build for it? I've been using +Parry/+AGI with a Terra Staff but some say that -eva setups are better, i dont see why really, would 2x Parry Knife be better than a staff to skillup with?

just go kill stuff and it will come.

You're going to get seriously burnt out and discouraged 'trying' to level parrying. Just tank stuff for your LS, for friends, for yourself, anything.

I know nothing about skilling up anything but since you are at 237 I'd stop equipping +parry gear.

Yeah i know parry skillups are more common in meripos / HNM tanking, most of the time im needed on PLD/NIN cause my HNM gear for NIN is kinda shit and i only have /WAR for it lol. Just for referrence sake though, i'd like to know a decent formula for parrying PL for those times when i dont have shit else to do...like right now im just standing at the Assault desk checking out the NPCs gear.

Chigoes are great for parry/shield/guard skill ups, but as stated above, I don't know much about skilling up, particularily at what level of mob your skill ups get capped at. Chigoes may be too low to still get skill ups for 237 parrying.

You can cap ANY skill on Steelshells as long as you fight the EM and T ones. It's just a big fat royal pain in the ass.

I'd say go for Puks in Den of Rancor with some heavy defense build and a RDM/WHM curing you. Do that for 30 days straight without sleeping.

Solo Yovra's. Only at night if needed, run away if they are about to rape you or somthing. Decently high level, plus they are NMs which do seem to give more parry skill. Its kinda risky, I generaly ran away when I knew they were about to WS. Prolly alot better with a mage friend/dual box of some sort.

But yea, skilling up parrying is not for the weak minded. I go insane when I try to do it. The bulk of my parrying skill comes at weird ass times. Like dynamis the other night, I got 1.1 parrying skill from two mobs, but the last like 5 tiamats I've tanked from 100% to death have not given me one skill.

Puks in Den of Rancor work great....But its a good idea to bring a healer for this because they are mandragoras and do Double attack every round.

T/VT Dhalmels in Bibiki Bay. May as well get some decent exp while "skilling it up".

Friend spent all his off-time as NIN/RDM with Steelshells at the zone to the Cloister of Lightning. Drove him a little bat crazy but after like 30 days of that I think he went from like 220 to 232 parry. The crabs are convenient in that you have a zone line nearby with relative safety compared to other more exotic locales posted in this thread.

The highest chigoes cap you out at about 190-200. I tried to go skill up at 200 with seven or eight at a time wailing on me, tons of parries, no skill.

I'm going to try out a few of the Puks at once in Den of Rancor the next chance I get the free time. Going for a full defense build and debating whether to go on SAM/WAR or NIN/WAR just because Seigan would be more useful overall than Utsusemi. SAM can use all the same gear, has the same VIT, more HP, and 13 less evasion skill in exchange for 5 less AGI.

Then, I'll have a RDM with capped Phalanx II and maybe a WHM with capped Regen III or BRD using Paeon if necessary to help negate damage I take, depending on how heavy it is... Hoping it'll work well and skill ups could come reasonably quick with 2-5 mobs attacking me at a fast speed. Most important part is being able to reduce the damage enough so I'll get hit for 0-10 max, any more than that and I don't think it'll work.

I'll post results here if I get around to it, currently at 251 parrying skill.

    Steelshells.

Shoot for EM/Tough once you're past about 230. Worked for me and I was able to set reasonable goals each time I went out and rarely did not meet them.

Just takes time and effort. I used no evasion skill save an Ungur Boomerang for pulling and stacked AGI and Parrying Skill, although I mixed and matched a lot and didn't really see much help in having either. Welcome to FFXI though, eh?

Also I never used Kurayami, just Hojo.

Well unless you have some people to help you, I'd recommend Steelshells. Go NIN/WHM /RDM, and just main hand any sort of dagger (parrying dagger of you want). And you can just use the better MP stealing WS whenever you need it. I went THF/WHM and capped my evasion doing this, and did this to get a ton of marksmanship skill for THF as well.

This lets you solo the tough ones without hojo or kurayami, and you won't care about the bubble showers adding up after a while. THF/WHM was funny though... I was mostly spamming Bloody Bolts, but I still needed lots of curing. Not to the point I was ever in trouble, but if I pulled a T one, I actually would drain it completely of MP before I would kill it.

If you have an army of people at your disposal, then Pucks would probably be the fastest way. Aggro one, link as many as you can handle, and pull them in the area of a tormentor. Aim all the pucks inbetween you and the tormentor, and just engage on the tormentor. Now you can have people cure you as much as needed and hate won't be any issue at all.

    How does Noctoshield from Diabolos compare with Phalanx II by the way? I know far more helpful SMNs than RDMs. ; ;

Zebraplant performed some tests on his RDM attempting to determine if there's a relation between INT and ACC reduction from Blind. He counted out roughly 1000 hits with a mob blinded with Blind, Blind II and not blinded. While he was discouraged because his evade rate as a RDM wasn't high enough to tell any difference between evade rates due to his INT, it did show that his parry rate increased substantially with blind on the mob.

Moral of the story: it might be better to blind a mob and wear -evasion than trying to boost AGI.

Pucks in Den of the Rancor are pretty nasty. While I was able to get some 0.5s out of them with parrying in the mid 220s, they hit fairly hard for trying to solo skill ups. They'd be ideal if you had a RDM helper, but solo I find it's easier to target something that gives me more face-time.

In that case Nin/War would be more useful that Sam/War in skilling parry! <3 Kuriyami :O
