Like he already mentioned, there was a successful abj drop switch-a-roo. So they have the authority. It probably depends on what SGM you talk to, their mood that day, and how convincing you can be. An LS DRK and and NIN with a suppa and abysmal were debating on whether they could convince a GM to let them swap. No harm in trying.

Anyway, this may potentially work, but I doubt it. You would have to go to the Shrine and say you just got the item. I don't know if their logs record items that you have received, but if they can see your log and can not find the Obtained: Whatever Earring That You Don't Want, they probably wont let you drop the item to obtain a new one.

I am listening. GM's won't use an item restore for a wrong choice. Only if you 1). Get an item and 2) Lose that item and 3) Wish to get the exact same item back.

As others have said, you picked the earring, you don't get to go back and rechoose. The only DM earring you'll get is the one you chose, even if you drop the original one awarded. Those logs record a LOT of stuff, so much it takes a while for them to search through it and find something like me accidentally tossing a Bibiki Seashell.

I've had a GM drop a moogle rod into my inventory since the event NPC wouldn't give me one (For attending last years Fan Festival). However for the GM to place the item in my inventory, I had to be placed in Mordion Gaol for a short time.

They do that to everyone when performing an item restore, since it takes a little bit- and apparently, it's easier than having dozens of people stare at them and send /tells while performing one.

To end this topic here, I already tried this GM call when the policy was first changed, to try and exchange my Tamas Ring for a Sattva Ring, by saying that there was a lag/connection problem that caused me to accidentally choose the wrong ring, and they wouldn't go for it.
