Thats because its easier to blame SE rather than some unknown entity providing SE's bandwidth. But still, according to Taj the packets are either being corrupted by SE's server while being sent out. Though I have another theory, could it be that there is some packet rewriting going on somewhere along the line? That could easily mangle the UDP packet headers causing the client to drop the packet.

I'm not sure how SE's network is laid out, but it seems to me there would be load balancing and QoS equipment all over their network that could easily do something to the packets. Same could be said for SE's bandwidth providers. There are so many hops between NA/EU and JP that any router along the way could culprit. From what I've heard (though its a bunch of rumors), JP players aren't having r0 or 3113 problems.

It has been happening since the update. So several ISP apparantly mess up somehow magically after a FFXI update, I don't think so
It would only take one backbone provider to mess up to affect a large number of ISPs.

Just seems strange that the majority of people have no issues at all if it is SE's fault.

I'm curious as to if this is what's causing the GM issues that's been going on since yesterday morning. Usually something like that gets fixed pretty quick.

Indirectly, but thats because of all the players making GM calls.

Yea I figured that, but I was wondering if the 'technical' issues were affecting it as well.

Taj - Have you tried reporting the problem to a GM? I know you've been able to successfully get them to listen to you about technical issues in the past. Maybe they'd actually listen to you.

Would be fine, but PS2 players are having issues too.

I was fine yesterday when I was at my b/f's, using his ISP. Today, at home, dead zones include Ru'lude Gardens, Kon Highlands, and The Shrine...

I know it's a long shot, lol. But hey, they did make changes after he reported the disconnect hack and some other stuff.

See this is why I'm tending to believe SE's explanation of a backbone problem. Someone else above also said that they were fine on on their home ISP but not at college.

It really does sound like one of the backbone providers is doing something to the packets that they shouldn't be.

But were they using the same computer/PS2/X-Box 360?

And honestly, I'm more apt to believe Taj over SE.

lol, new pop conditions for Steam Cleaner.

Yes, my computer is the same one, it gets carted backwards and forwards. I know I was fine in Kon Highlands yesterday, went through there on the way to lolODS, but today - nada.

I have tried both my PC and my 360. Same shit on both systems. I'm going to call Time Warner and tell them that I can't get my Tactics pearl because I get stuck in the hall of transferrence. I'm sure they'll be able to fix it right quick...........

Could an improperly configured router (from a DST fix, for example) cause headers on a packet to be "mangled", as Taj says they are?

Though I can't imagine a DST fix to cause such a big problem...

Why are some people affected, and not others? Why are the deadzones different for everyone? Why can someone have issues at one location, but be fine from a different connection? Why does release/renewing your IP help sometimes?

Sounds like more than just a malformed packet header, or a backbone provider problem.

No I'm 100% certain DST has nothing to do with this. Having the date an hour off isn't going to stop traffic flow. And I know plenty about the head ache of the DST change since I'm a network/system admin. The biggest problem with the DST change is making sure time sensitive databases are time stamped correctly, etc. That will have no effect on traffic flow, peering or routing.
