Taj said the SE is sending the data back to the client, but because the (presumably) encapsulated data headers are corrupt the client side drops the UDP packet. When someone says the packet is encrypted, its the data not the headers. So the encapsulated data sent from SE is encrypted, yet containing mangled data.
Haven't had a look at ffxi packets past initial glaze before really. Just checked tho (well, the latest public info anyway (I don't have ethreal on this comp to check the packets itself). I doubt they modifed that either tho): Even the packet header in data part isn't encrypted. First 0x1C bytes of the data is packet header part and isn't encrypted (from parts that are solved anyway).

The funny part is people are convinced they can change their own IP address and MAC address, even if the normal person could change those things, it wouldnt fix anything.

This does bring back some memories...

I think after SE nerfed rusty > padded caps (lowering NPC sell price from 3500ish to 300ish), the servers got assraped by DDoS attacks for a week or two. I'm pretty sure it was found coming out of China too, but that could be inaccurate.

Also, I had a similar problem about a year or so ago... the weird thing is, I'd R0 not only in certain zones, but only in specific parts of the areas. I could wander Tavnazian Safehold freely without interruption, but if approached the zone to Miseraux/Lufaise area, I'd immediately R0. Sacrarium was similar... I could wander all through the Lich maze just fine, but I'd R0 the instant I entered one of the six Fomor Rooms.

I'm pretty sure that's what caused me to give up on using a Router...

Mar. 12, 2007 15:00 [PDT] From: FINAL FANTASY XI

Concerning the Connectivity Issue (Mar. 9): Follow-up

We understand some players are still experiencing connectivity issues when they are trying to log into FINAL FANTASY XI or while traveling through various areas in FINAL FANTASY XI.

Again, our team of technicians investigated and confirmed that our FINAL FANTASY XI servers are working properly, and our service is not experiencing any technical difficulties at this time. However we are continuing to investigate the exact cause of the issue and will make every effort to assist in remedying it.

If you are having connectivity issues, try connecting to FINAL FANTASY XI again at another time. We deeply apologize for the inconvenience you may be experiencing.

You didnt change your MAC address, you simply changed the display name. MAC address' are hardwired/programmed into the circuit boards. There is a reason you cant normally change them once theyre set.

And I dont think you really fixed anything, as you said, other zones still dont work. That switch in working/nonworking zones could have been triggered by anything, even a simple restart of FFXI.

Thats not exactly true. Yes there is a burned in MAC address on the network card, but many operating systems can over ride that. In most cases the MAC isn't even on a ROM chip but EEPROM or non static flash memory.

Still having same bullshit d/c issue in the same zones. I love how SE is STILL claiming its not their fault. Hilarious.

You may not be able to change the hardcoded MAC address, however you can clone MAC addresses and otherwise change how they appear to other devices. e.g. if your cable provider is picky about the MAC address of the modem or router, and you change equipment (or get a router when you had none before), you sometimes may have to clone the MAC address of the device it was formerly connected to to make it happy. The device itself still knows its own real MAC address, but you've configured it to tell another address instead.

Wouldn't everybody be having these issues if it were SE's fault? That's like saying half the player base getting R0 spikes every 60 seconds is SE's fault, when the other half of the player base has no issues (which has happened before).

Well, it may still somehow be their fault, but it seems odd that something that is wrong with SE's servers would only affect select people.

I was like 'wtf?' too, but yeah, normally you cant change them. Yes you can change it via some apps, but the true MAC address is still being referenced. Even if you manage to find one of those hardware reprogrammable dealios you can plug network/video/etc cards in, the original MAC address is still there.

Anyway... the reason I brought this up is because changing these things wont really work, unless SE is blocking a range somehow mistakingly ofcourse.

It's just weird that Player A. in NY is having the same problem as Player B. in AZ.

Normal people can change IP address quite easily in most of cases (since most of people don't have static IPs). Sure, changing the real mac address is bigger deal (we don't really need to make stuff more complicated for people reading this thread, some are still thinking DDoS is causing this, so no point making them more confused), but you don't need to change that anyway. As long as you can obtain new public IP (which generally depends on mac address being sent), it doesn't matter even if real mac address is different.

Yes, it rarerly solves the problem (if ever?), but in most of cases it switches dead zones. Would you rather have Zi'Tah or DA as dead zone? If they manage to switch dead zones to zones that don't matter to them, it's worth of doing in most of cases.

[edit]meh, took too long to type. oh well

Its happened before. An update.. a bit over a year ago I guess, caused people using mobility radeons with 64mb(may have been 128 too) and lower to crash right after they logged in. I was one of them, and the solution was to turn the graphics all the way down and on the lowest res, looked worse than atari.

They did fix it, but I think it took almost a month.

It only takes one simple cli command in linux to change the hardware MAC address as you please Back in the old days (10 years ago) you couldn't change them, but that was mostly because EEPROM wasn't very common at the time. MAC addresses are in layer 2 of the OSI model, if you change it in the operating system, it gets changed in the EEPROM. That how a lot of consumer grade routers do MAC cloning.

Your computers MAC addresses doesn't get routed past your local router anyways. There simply isn't a way to block a range of MAC addresses on the internet because that information doesn't get past your router. Which is exactly why anyone saying "change your MAC addy" is a n00b.

If SE was blocking IP address ranges, most of us with the r0 problem wouldn't be able to log in to begin with.

I've been having problems since friday and tried alot of different things but nothing seemed to work. Yesterday I unplugged my modem for awhile then turned it back on with ps2 directly plugged into it and I finally logged in. However both my jeuno mules immediately d/c'd upon log in but my main character which was in whitegate was fine, no R0 zones, no problems. So a little while ago I tried to hook everything back up thru my router and I got error 3113 at acquiring player data again like before. So it looks like I'll have to deal with this for now but it stinks I can't use my pc while playing. I also noticed there was a small update with 5 files? Anyone know what they were? Wish me luck at logging back in

It's more weird that Player A is having a problem while his next door neighbor, Player B, with the same internet service is not.

I know, but in my job I can't avoid it. I died a little inside when I was taught about it.
