The only way I can't see this being SE's fault is if all the people affected are using some common parts of the internet backbone that's borked on its way to Japan... I think any problem like that would be fixed real quick though

Just out of curiosity... who's experience this issue that isn't using Comcast?

Anyone experiencing the issue that's not in North America?

Thanks, didn't see that thread. I'll be amazed if this isn't an SE issue (admitted guilt or not).

But if its an SE issue, why am I unaffected, and why have I never been affected ever in the past by connectivity issues that others may experience? I doubt anyone in my area has, either.

It's SEs fault, how is it not? When did these issues arrise? After the update. Theyve done this once before and try to pass it off as it not being there fault and, surprise, after another update it worked again. It may be a protocol fuck up, it may be a server on their end, it could be anything, but it's on SE's ass and no one elses.

The reason why theyre supposedly having a problem finding what the problem is, is because its not happening to everyone, and the people that are having the problem, the problem is happening in different places and not always occuring.

But it really shouldnt be that hard as it has to have something to do with the latest update.

    Hi,

I don't have any problem with the current issue, but I did have it in the past (about 6 months ago); R0ing for no reason and get time out error code.

Went to SE, and basically they said the same thing about opening port and stuff.

Nothing worked, then out of desperation I bought US Robotic brand router to replace my old Linksis one, and the problem never appeared again. I'm not implying brand has to do with anything nor I'm my expert enough to explain how changing router can solve the problem, but it worked.

So if you have a friend or something try asking them to borrow their router and do a quick test to see if it helps.

You obviously haven't been reading the thread, or are just ignoring the blatant proof presented against this. Two computers sharing the same connection have different dead zones. How can this possibly be an ISP issue?

I'm starting to think it's a hardware compatability thing, in that they changed something that's not agreeing with a certain brand of modem or router. That would explain why only some people are affected... and why Square can't figure it out--because they're not testing with incompatable hardware.

Furthermore, I have two PCs and a laptop capable of playing FFXI. All of them share the same Comcast broadband connection, all of them have "dead zones", and none of them are in common.

I also have multiple computers with FFXI, all have different Dead Zones but also share a couple.

Did anyone with the zone problems try logging the connection with ethereal or similar?

I have not experienced any dead zones, neither on my PC nor my laptop.

What I haven't been able to figure out is: Why does getting a new IP from the DHCP server and/or changing how your computer was connected to the network have an effect on FFXI?

I can now play on my PS2, but I cannot play on my PC. The PC refuses to download update information. The dead zones are the same on the PS2 as far as I can tell. Ive tried everything in every R0 thread with the same results.

I've read the entire thread, but I'm not as quick to take certain statements as "blatant proof". You're also ignoring "blatant proof" presented in defense of SE, too. There are many people who have no issues or deadzones whatsoever, and in my case (I assume others as well) I've never had any issues with SE's servers in the past.

But really, its silly to call either blatant proof, when neither is proof of anything at all.

The fact that two computers with the same connection having different deadzones isn't any more conclusive of SE's liability than is the fact that several people don't have issues is of an ISP's liability.

    Here is what we know:

    A) Two computers on the same connection can have different dead zones.
    B) Many people have connectivity issues while many more do not have any, and may never have had any issues.

Based on that alone, you can't say A is blatant proof that SE's at fault in light of B, and you can't say SE is innocent just because of B.

At least in A, you still have problems, the zones are just different. In B, some just flat out don't have any problems at all. That may or may not mean anything either, but I'm not going to take A as indisputable proof of SE fucking up and just toss out all other information.

I just read this at alla, maybe its true, maybe its not. *shrug*

    Ok

I just got off the phone with a live tech support from playonline, and this is what i found out....

It is not a router problem, it is a problem with a Third Party server. This 3rd party holds the various servers for FF. When are create your character your character is stored in this 3rd party server where you will connect to your main server, but this 3rd party server crashed and they are in the process of trying to get it up and running. Sorry i dont have more trying to communicate the best i can for how they explained it to me. My room mate and I are both on xbox 360, and on Ifrit, but his character works and mine dosent, which the tech said is normal just due to the fact that our characters were dumped into different 3rd pty servers for hosting.

The 3rd pty host contacted Playonline and told them their system crashed, so now playonline realizes that it is not our routers. This guy was honest enough to admit it. Only thing he said was if you get in a good zone, just stay till prob is fixed or contact a GM to have him move you to a safe zone if you know of one.

I think I've d/c'd a grand total of maybe two or three times in the past 3 years (not counting server crashes or other cases where everyone on the server also d/cs), and those were due to Comcast, not FFXI.

So I'm willing to believe there's never been a problem with SE's servers, per se, but just problems in the connection between SE's servers and the providers of those in other areas who do get problems. If you think about it, if it were strictly SE's servers that were fucked up, everyone would have dead zones and connectivity issues and lag, etc. But every time something like this comes up in the past, only certain people are experiencing heavy lag, login trouble, connectivity issues, etc. Not everyone.

So it can't be the servers themselves, unless there's some explanation for how some people never get affected by such issues.
Just wanted to say that while I haven't been affected by this particular problem, I did have connection issues in the past with an update a year or two ago. It wouldn't let me connect to POL at all. I fixed it by changing the MAC address in my router. Since then I haven't had any problems.

maybe it's true. I'm not thinking of is the SE's server crash, but believing that there might be somekind of coding during the patch up that mess up with the packet stuff.

but if the character server crash is true, then how i'm so lucky(or unlucky?) that both account in different type of client not able to login into character screen at all. so, i'm thinking i'm only trust partially about character server crash, but it should be some software or coding problem...

Port Bastok has been broken since last Thursday or Friday as far as I know.

Today I changed my MAC address and did ipconfig /release + /renew... lo and behold it fixed it! I got halfway across the zone just fine, and attempted to /sea the area... and immediately R0'd again, and it was broken upon logging back on.

Was running around trying to conduct a survey of which areas are dead for me - zoned into Qulun Dome and got the fucking Quadav Hat cutscene... except that it won't load, so now I'm stuck in the zone. Fuck you Square.

I've personally havent been able to log onto ff11 since friday when connected through my router. When my connection is straight into my PC it works flawlessly. One small problem, theres 3 other people in my house that need the internet.
