Possibly.
It might just be having to scan across the drive for fragmented files often.
How regular is it and when does it occur? (activity or dormant or both)
Run an analysis on your C drive for fragmentation (right click C drive > properties > defragment > analyze) - does it show as badly fragmented?
It would do it once in a while in the past. Now its every other second. Defragment says "you do not need to defragment this drive".
If you start experiencing hangs (the computer freezes) or its taking insanely long to read stuff, then the disc may be FUBAR.
It could also be, because you have too many information/files, and even if it says you dont need to defragment, do it.
Yeah it sounds like it's on it's way out. Either faulty mechanism or something foreign (dust etc) is on the head.
I'd personally suggest backing up your info ASAP and if it's under warrenty, contact your retailer for service/repair.
Before you do though, backup your info, run the defrag and run a full error check. Properties on C, scan disk and tick both check boxes for full scan. You will need to reboot for this as it runs before Windows starts. If it's still clicking contact your retailer.
This harddrive is "new". I got it a few months ago. Not alot of stuff on it.
And by new I mean my laptop is given to me by my university. When my last harddrive crashed in jan, the HD I got as a replacement died a week later and then that replacement died a few days later. <.< So this harddrive and my other harddrives are just reformated used hard drives. It makes a ton of clickish noises all of a sudden now and sometimes it sounds like someone dropping a marble. And yeah its starting to hang a bit.
IHML. I just got this computer to be how I like it now I need another harddrive that will probably be shitty also. ~.~ And yeah I backed up most important shit.
You can get programs which clone your drive so you can make an exact duplicate on other drive, but they're a pain imo.
Sounds like it's had it's time anyway; so if you can get it replaced.
Things which usually contribute toward reduced hard drive life include, but not limited to:
- Overheating (using a laptop on a carpet etc which covers vents). If you like to use a laptop in bed you should seriously consider getting a laptop cooler, which is just a small stand for your laptop that usually has a couple of fans and vents underneath and plugs in via USB.
- Shock -Sharp movements or banging your laptop (I suspect this might be you, Kuno lol) which can cause your hard drive heads to touch the spinning drive
In other news, my harddrive crashed about 10minutes after making that post.
I backed up most of my stuff but still lost alot of it.
The end.
Edit: I don't bang my laptop. Only my TV gets it's ass beat for being a dirty bastard. I treat it like royalty. And yes I usually have it on the bed or something but theres a side vent on the back and such.
Well HD can "just" fail for no apparent reason, its nothing strange it happened.
It sucks nevertheless tho.
Except in this case it was screaming "I'm failing".Originally Posted by Tajin
