If it's a laptop, always get a DELL... it's just easier to pay for it, and to be honest they're actually really good (I just got a new one, Inspiron 9400)... if it's a desktop, it's your call really but dells are still pretty good. oh yeah, and because I bought it before Vista came out I got a free upgrade from them (still haven't decided whether I should install it or not, since I hear it's pretty dumb atm.)

And I got my computer about a week after placing the order... so idk what happened to yours lol.

My apologies if you've answered this already, but what is your current Dell model? (I happen to have a premier dell account...only because my work has required it as of late...and because of that, know a few models that have a record of crapping out that Dell doesn't make public in general, but have support plans again that they don't make public unless you specify the problem)...

That being said, when it comes to top line quality servers, I support HP at this point, when it comes to every day PC's, at this point Dell has my support. Again, this is for generic PC's. I personally prefer to custom build my own PC's but understand when someone just wants to buy 1 PC and be done with it, and haven't seen many problems with Dell in that regard, but as I said above, there are a few models with a history of problems that they don't make public unless you call them out on it.

If you get a dell, get one of the higher end modules if you can. I got a cheaper one and it started to crap out on me withing 6 months. I got a higher end one and it's been great to me for 2 years. The only thing that went wrong so far is that the graphics card they gave me got fried and i had to get a new one.

Gulkeeva* - still owes me a few "quickies"...

-Trainwreck turned out to be uh...I dunno...I wasn't around when random accusations came out about Trainwreck..and had nothing to do with he/she/it...

I fail to see what any of this has to do with the topic at hand...

you cannot get cheaper than a dell by building your own if you know how to work it. full system will be in the 400-500 range

I see 359 as the base price for a Dell computer on their site. That's

    512MB Single Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz
80GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) w/DataBurst Cache
    16X DVD-ROM Drive
    No Monitor
NVIDIA GeForce 6150 LE Integrated Graphics GPU

Upgrade any of those to a fairly good lvl and the price jumps to $619 dollars. ( I didnt even update the video card yet). Now looking at newegg I can find.
    other stuff
    AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual-Core 3800+
    Genuine Windows Vista™ Home Basic
    1GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz- 2DIMMs
    160GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) w/DataBurst Cache™
48X CD-RW/ DVD Combo Drive edit
MONITOR 19 inch E197FP Analog Flat Panel
NVIDIA GeForce 6150 LE Integrated Graphics GPU edit
    Integrated 7.1 Channel Audio

    $499 oh snap?

    http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/ ... vw=classic

took me about 30 seconds to find that one, and it includes 19" LCD, and there are better deals to be had

Wow, nice link Sono. I think we got a winner here Daahan. With the only exception being the CPU (I would've preferred E6600, but I guess it's marginal if you aren't looking for a difference) and the RAM (I'm a 2GB enthusiast), this is under your $1500 limit:

    Exterior Automotive Color:
    Silver Aluminum Finish

    Power Supply:
MAINGEAR 750W Ultra Quiet Power Supply

    Motherboard:
Asus P5N-E SLI nForce 650i SLI

    Processor:
    E6400 Core 2

    $46.25
    CPU Cooling:
Zalman CNSP8000 Ultra Quiet Heatpipe Cooler

    $65.00
    Memory:
    1024MB Corsair DDR2 PC5300 DDR667 (2x512MB)

    Hard Drive One:
Western Digital Caviar SE 200GB 7200RPM 8MB Cache - SATA II

    $22.86
    Optical Drive One:
    16X DVD-ROM - Black

    Video Card:
    NVIDIA GeForce 7600GT 256MB PCIe

    $142.00
    Sound Card:
    Onboard 8-channel High Definition Audio

    Network Card:
    Dual Gigabit LAN

    Game:
FREE! Guild Wars: Factions PC Game

    Operating System:
    Microsoft Windows XP Professional Edition

    $16.81
    Warranty:
    1 Year Maingear Warranty

    Reconfigure Prelude Core
    Product Subtotal: $1,458.53
What you can do is downgrade to an E6300 and upgrade to 2GB of RAM and still be around $1500. You should go with these guys.

The points about dell mobos are correct in that you can't overclock etc.

It is very true if you spec a dream machine at dell you can get cheaper elsewhere because they don't provide the best deals on the top of the line stuff so comparing an XPS machine to what you can build isn't that fair because they don't have good deals on those, they are exploiting the people who want gaming machines but don't want to build it themselves (basically competing with alienware and the like).

buying a dell isn't usually about getting the best machine but getting the computer with a processor/ram/etc thats in the current pricing sweet spot.

I usually buy a new dell every couple years and get a sweet deal on it. The latest one I got their 24" UltraSharp included and sold it on craigslist and ended up paying ~300 for a good machine. I added a vid card after and more memory which is the same as you would pay for homebuilt for those parts (typically newegg)

to me its taking advantage of the best of both worlds... Also I typically sell the 2 year 'old' computer on craigslist for about what I originally paid.

The link you put evilbau has an intergrated graphics card by Nvidia. I would go with the 256mb ATI over that any day. Also Intel Duel core > AMD. That is where the price difference comes into play as well. AMD tend to overheat because they have nothing to stop them going full blast like Intel. Also I would def go with 2gigs of memory over 1gig. Like I said before though, yes with dell you get the tech support line and CS that is good but Dell tends to use the lowest price parts they can afford to on your machine. I see no warranty listed but I know they at least give a 90day warranty. With the money the OP has he could build a far better computer on his/her own then they could buy from Dell.

the nice thing about maingear is they were reviewed in hardocps consumer evaluation and really did an amazing job, the guy who builds your computer techs it, so he knows it before you do, they are pretty hardcore

    Your choices:

    1) Build your own.
    or
    2) Buy Dell.

    If it's a laptop, buy a Dell.

If it's a desktop, just build your own...

That maingear is pretty appealing. The question Epical my good friend, that sample you posted for me; is it a comp that overall pretty good in all categories or is it more of a gaming computer?
