HP or Dell?

Not really a tough decision from my standpoint. To me the major PC manufacturers are all the same. I have worked for a lot of them. I curently work for Apple. The PC guys use many of the same component manufacturers so the only major diff is the logo. It's like choosing between Coke and Pepsi. Yes, they taste a little different but they are both colas and have more similarities than differences. You are going to find just as many people who swear by Coke and hate Pepsi as you are going to find Pepsi lovers.

Just look to see who has a sale going on and go for the best deal with the specs you want. You do not sound like a tech head who "OMG, I cannot use a computer that loads a game 0.001 seconds slower than some home built PC."

If you are even less picky then you can save even more gil by buying a refurb model. Of course you cannot customize it but you might get lucky and find a refurb that suits your needs.

The only thing I really dislike about buying a PC from Dell or HP is the bundled software. There is a lot of junk on there that just takes up unnecessary disk space and some do annoying pop ups upon start up asking you to subcribe to their service.

I would much rather buy one of the Dell "Open Source" desktops which come without an OS installed. This way you can load in your own bare-bones Windows OS or maybe even choose Linux or w/e. It's much nicer to know that the only stuff on your PC (and slowing down your PC) is stuff that you personally installed.

Go easy on people who don't want to build a computer. It's not for everybody. If you're comfortable doing it and know what you want, then it's great.

Telling someone they should build their computer is like telling people they should make their own pizza instead of calling Pizza Hut. Sure, everyone knows how a pizza is made, but if you order it, you save the time you spend picking out ingredients and toppings, throwing it together, and cooking it yourself. Also, in case you suck at cooking, if you get a burnt pizza, you can call Pizza Hut and get your money back or another pizza, but if you baked it yourself you're SOL.

This may be a better comparison. You can make your own clothes. Anyone can go buy fabric, needles, thread, etc. It's just that most people know that they would look worse than your garden variety hobo when the process was over.

The difference is that it would take so long to cut and sew a shirt that time could be better spent at mcdonalds making min wage salary and using the money to buy shirts. Time = money. For me to make my own shirts would actually cost me more money than to simply go out and buy them because the time I spent putting the shirts together I could of simply been at my day job working overtime.

You can also screw up a shirt.. you can't really mess up the assembly of a computer. Any decent part comes with big fold out diagrams that make it so easy even a caveman could do it. It isn't like the old days where you could put the AT connectors on backwards and fry the motherboard.

Another major difference is that you need a lot of shirts for different occasions and enough to always have something clean.. You just need 1 computer.

And that is when the sewing elitists will make remarks that people shouldn't be afraid to try to sew. There have been many advances in sewing machine technology in the last few years.

I have owned 2 dells, and my parents have one, and we haven't had any problems with all three of them. Last year, I was looking for a computer to replace my older Dell, and after talking about my dilemmas with two programmers, they just said "just buy a Dell". And I did. And all is fine. My brother built himself one, wich burned in the fiery pits of hell because of a virus, and then bought two from dell, one which he uses as his TiVo, they've worked fine for him.

I won't say that Dell is the best thing since sliced bread, but I think it's safe to buy from them.

I've heard bad things about HP, but I can't say either or. I have used an HP ocasionally and I had no problems, but I can say I've had nothing but good experiences with Dell.

Also, like someone else said, look in the refurbished page thingy, sometimes you can find really nice deals on computers that have a scratch on the outside but are totally fine machine-wise.
