The purposes of the study are to collect uncorrupted data. If they saved the penguins in the fish bowl, they could miss an observation in which they eventually find their way out which would provide valuable insight. The order of nature says that the penguins will survive or die eventually irregardless of the input of the scientists.

Regarding the Baby Penguin, same scenario where they need to collect uncorrupted data in order to present authentic results. If they intervened every time the penguins encountered a danger, then it would be meaningless on the long run. The purpose is to inform, not to provide a meaningless assist to animals that will likely die due to situations they encountered anyways.

unfortunately just because its a bird doesnt give it any less value than anything else. you shouldnt be selective when it comes to giving aid to sentient beings.

i agree we should be spending money on starving people, but the burden of having the ability to care for not only your own species but others means you are morally bound to help.

this speciesism is a direct result of dated ideals that a divine power created animals for human consumption, which is absurd. we're all on the same boat, and there is more than enough people around to actually make a difference. unfortunately most people like to bitch and moan about some peoples choice to help something instead of picking up the slack and helping the other things that need it.

This is exactly how I feel and what irritated me I think. I have yet to see evidence that a black hole will sprout and suck us all into oblivion if we actually try to help something versus just observing it.
I guess I just can't imagine someone studying something in attempt to save it, yet still watch it die and consider that helping.

Though my post is specific towards penguins, I think any documentary of this type would have annoyed me. If you only want to think of humans, I will say that anthropologists tend to annoy me in the same way.

They go into a poor village in Africa to study the culture, but god-forbid we give them medicines or teach them how to live better, because that would "ruin their culture".

I would say F culture, who cares if they're "less advanced" then us (if that's even accurate). I like activists who go out there and help build the wells and teach the people about the spreading of diseases (Bono from U2 comes to mind), to actually help them. I would think those people care more about their children surviving, than staying the same.


Oh and the documentary wasn't march of the penguins though many of the footage was taken from it, I suppose it was a shortened version that included some clips outside the film.

As for the baby penguin, there is more to just "Saving and letting it go". It could have been taken to a zoo for caring. And for those that say "zoo is a cage" freezing to death on ice when you're not even one year old is better?
