    Book recommendation thread

Never seen a thread on this before.

I admit that Im a book nerd. My favorites are Survivor by Chuck Palahniuk, Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden, and High Fidelity by Nick Hornby

My looking for some recommendations on any good books. Im pretty open when it comes to genres, but Im not so much into Science Fiction so please try not to mention any, unless theyre REALLY good.

    Anyways, have at it!

Heart of Darkness by Conrad, Crime and Punishment by Dostoyevsky, and The Things They Carried by O'Brien are all very good.

I -loved- Survivor. I also read Choke by him and it was pretty good. You don't really know where the plot is going until it ends though.

Sex Drugs Co Co Puffs, and Killing yourself to live. Both done by Chuck Klosterman.

He takes more of a popular culture mix.

Do techno-thrillers count as science fiction? If so, then only The Firm by John Grisham; if not, add Prey by Michael Crichton in there.

    Not so much.

On-topic: I'm mostly into Sci-fi/Fantasy, so I've got nothing for you.

I'm in the process of reading Invisible Monsters, but I'm looking for an author that's as entertaining/similar to Chuck Palahniuk. Anyone know anything?

I recently read Cell by Stephen King. I thought it was a great book.

Tai-Pan / King Rat / Shogun by James Clavell. All must reads.

Last of the Breed by Louis L'Amour.

    Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov.

For Sci Fi anything by Timothy Zahn.

A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess.

Watchmen by Alan Moore & Dave Gibbons.

Brave New World by Aldous Huxley.

    1984 by George Orwell.

Call of the Wild by Jack London.

    Older Stuff:

    Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer.

Murder in the Cathedral by T. S. Eliot

    The Idiot by Fyodor Dostoyevsky.

The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway.

The Gay Science by Friedrich Nietzsche.

Confessions / City of God by Augustine.

I dare anyone (with 1/2 a brain) to read any of these books and not like them.

I would recommend any of the short story anthologies by Neil Gaiman. Namely Smoke and Mirrors.
