Sci Fi (yeah I know you dont like it but this is good)

A Spell for Chameleon Xanth series #1

How could you possibly classify Xanth as sci-fi? The entire series is located in a world where technology doesn't work but magic does.

Also if you like the first one, there's like 30 more. I stopped around 8 or 9, but Piers Anthony has written a ton of them.

The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan (really really long...11 books ranging from 500 to 1000 pages, and there's gonna be a 12th eventually)

I read these too and agree.

I'd like to add Terry Goodkinds Sword of Truth series.. It's like Jordan only with an R rating.

Someone also mentioned the Rhabsody series, good books as well.

I like most of Gaimans works.

American Gods, The Sandman, and Anansi Boys to name a few.

Pretty much The Dark Tower series by Stephen King and all the books related to it.

The first two issues of the Dark Tower comic book have been pretty good, too.

Personal recommendation, although it is sci-fi: Ender's Game, by Orson Scott Card.

The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Seems simple, but in my experience I learn something new from the book every time I read it.

The Thief Of Always by Clive Barker. Wonderful...

The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown (adur) Just try to remember it's fiction hohoho.

The Autumn of the Patriarch, and One Hundred Years Of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez are so gewd!

El Popol Vuh - This one is a compilation of the Maya religious and diety belief system, it's a very interesting read.

If you're a fan of Warcraft then the War of the Ancients Trilogy was a really good read, done by one of the Dragonlance authors Richard A. Knaak. And then theres the Halo books, only the ones by Eric Nyland though.

Haruki Murakami

A japan obsessed college friend of mine recommended this author to me. I didn't think anything of it until I saw a used copy of Norwegian Wood and picked it up for cheap. I can't say that I was too impressed. There was some buildup and then the book just kind of ended. A lot of people have said some great things about him, but I don't really see it. =/

I would recommend any of the short story anthologies by Neil Gaiman. Namely Smoke and Mirrors.

It is hit or miss unfortunately...

I would recommend Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World, or a Wind-up Bird Chronicle over Norwegian Wood though. Also the Elephant Vanishes (short story collection).

Other authors books (i didn't have time yesterday)

China Mieville ~ Very very original "fantasy" author. His style is quite original, and very hard to compare to anything else out there. He is one of the authors that is given credit for creating a new genre called "New Weird"

Nightwatch by Sergey Lukyanenko ~ Also been made into a film. This is part of a tetralogy by this russian author. Unfortunately (AFIK) only the first book has been translated.

Song of Ice and Fire Series by George R. R. Martin ~ Great fantasy epic, with many more characters and plot arcs than LOTR (not to take away from that excellent series).

Battle Royale by Koushun Takami. No doubt many of you have seen this film (if you haven't... do it... now) but this is the novel that went on to become the film. The book is a must read for any fan of the film. Kind of like reading Fight Club (GREAT book by Pahlaniuk), even though you have seen the movie.

That is enough for now, i read a lot on my way to and from work so i will always have more recs if ya like any of these or even think you might.

The Difference Engine by William Gibson and Bruce Sterling ~ Steam Punk. Also by Bruce Sterling, The Artificial Kid, but it can be hard to find.

Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson ~ One of my favorite books of all time, but be warned it is long and can be slow at first until it hooks you. Some people hate it, but if you are one of the people that lets it hook you... have fun.

i am on a political books kick for a couple years so here are a some 'easy' reads that were interesting and enriches your appreciation of government, just to make sure to realize it might be/probably is biased

all the best (collection of letters from/to GHWBush)
a world transformed (The other GHWBush book written with his nsa advisor brent scowcroft about the historical foreign policy events during his presidency)
Clinton autobiography
Against all enemies (the one by richard clarke about our terrorist policies before and leading up to 9/11)
the two woodward and bernstein books covering watergate (All the president's men, and the final days)
Woodward's book about deep throat after he died
Nixon autobiography
Reagan Autobiography

i selected those because they provided the most insights into former presidents (except the deep throat one) and for readability and for needing the least government background. I have a newfound respect for most of the people.

I HIGHLY advise reading any Kurt Vonnegut book you can get your hands on. He is by far, my favorite author of all time. Some of my personal faves are

I'll see your Cryptonomicon by Stephenson and raise you Snow Crash also by Stephenson. Either way, both are great (Cryptonomicon is my personal favorite book of all time).

House of Leaves by Danielewski.

Strangers by Dean Koontz.

Plum Island by Nelson DeMille. Then maybe General's Daughter, Up Country, The Lion's Game, etc.

Anything by Christopher Moore. Lamb is probably my favorite, but they're all pretty awesome.

Reading Nightwatch (mentioned earlier) at the moment. Just finished Next by Chrichton.

Doesn't everything by King tie into the Dark Tower in some way or another? I remember seeing a website about it that has all the tie ins. Kinda interesting if you like king.

But yes, I would also highly recommend The Talisman. Really different than anything I've ever read. Good stuff.

Also, if you enjoy king I still think 'It' is an amazing book. It's freaken huge, but worth it.

Also, while I haven't read it, I hear The Stand is amazing (much better than the crappy movie) as well.
